The writer of that article has a very active imagination.
GIJOE and Fury Force are apples and oranges. Let's say you work for Marvel and you come up with a pitch of a team of soldiers that work for Nick Fury. Then a few months or years down the line Hasbro comes knocking on Marvel's door and has an idea for new action figures. A Hasbro I might add that has been intent on reviving a dead line that is near and dear to your heart and that when you are presented with an idea, you go visit the grave of one of the founding members of Hasbro and let them know you found a way to bring back GIJOE. Do you really think that Hasbro is going to do a 180 and say OK sure we had this idea. However now we are going to trash months of work and go with your amateur (Hama was at the bottom of the Marvel food chain then) idea and name of Fury Force and it won't have anything to do with the military or what we have established to be GIJOE. We will just let you make it part of the comic book universe of Marvel. Soon you will be fighting the Hulk and cozying up to Spiderman in a crossover battling Hydra. No I don't think Hasbro would have gone for that at all. Not at all. Hasbro was determined to bring back GIJOE as they knew it. Not incorporate it into the already well established Marvel Universe. Kit needs to go back and watch some documentaries.

Galactus comes down, looks around... and stomps all the Joes into paste.
That's the reality of how the Joe team would end in a universe full of super heroes and super villians... |

I was pretty die-hard in the GI Joe comics. I read other comics now and again, but I didn't really ever get into following them ( I don't think I ever read an x-men book until the movie came out). I remember often reading kids writing in suggesting marvel team ups. I wished bad things on those kids (sorry if it was any of you). GI Joe was the one book that kinda stood alone. They have all the other books, I wanted GI Joe to stay that way.
Now, I couldn't care less what they do with GI Joe, as long as it doesn't trickle into the ARAH run that Hama does.

The premise of the article while fun to play with is completely off. Even if everything had gone differently and Fury Force had become a reality there still would have been a GI Joe. In reality the what if being laid out by the article is "What if Fury Force had been greenlite and thus Hama never wrote the GI Joe comics?" The answer is GI Joe would still exist and Hasbro would have simply found a different writer. Would GI Joe then be different? Absolutely! Hama is obviously one of the biggest creative forces behind the brand thus had he not been a part of it the brand would have been drastically different, but Hasbro would have still made most of the exact same figures and vehicles, they still would have sought out writers for their comics and cartoons, etc. So the differences to Joe would be what would the other writer had done differently. For instance Snake Eyes probably wouldn't have been mute (nor a ninja). Scarlett probably would have never been romantically linked with Snake Eyes and instead have been paired with Hawk (although Sunbow probably would have still put her with Duke so that would have likely been the same). There may have never been a Baroness or a Tunnelrat or a Billy. But most of the other figures we'd still have although their characters might have been different (although Sunbow writers probably would have still treated 90% of the characters the same).
Meanwhile on the other side of the tracks, Fury Force would probably be nothing like GI Joe outside of a few vague elements. The Fury Force team probably would have had 6 to 10 members tops instead of the hundreds of characters within the GI Joe ranks. Fury Force would have never had a Roadblock, or Duke, or Gung Ho, or a Flint, or a Beachhead, or a Snow Job, or..... because seeing as there would be no toys there would be no reason to create all those specialists and later year characters. And similarly within the ranks of Hydra there probably wouldn't have been a Destro or Zartan equivalent because there would have been no figures being sent to Hama to inspire those characters. So even if Hama had been able to create his Fury Force comic that comic/characters would have been very different from the comics and characters he created in his GI Joe comics.

Actually, if G.I. Joe is apples, then Fury Force is an apple seed. If Fury Force had gone ahead, we would have still got G.I. Joe probably, but without Hama it wouldn't have had it's signature voice and the comic probably wouldn't have lasted a year. And all that characterization that we got from the file cards would have been done by different people, and almost assuredly not as well. The toys would have still be just as great as ever, but without the spark Hama gave the characters, I doubt it would have ever been the same. Fury Force might actually be more like what some of us would want, a small team that didn't need new characters coming in every year to sell toys. Instead of having Sci Fi, Leatherneck and Wet Suit, we might have got more mileage out of Flash, Gung Ho and Torpedo.
The question that really needs to be asked is, why doesn't Marvel just make Fury Force now? It's not really needed for the movies, but it wouldn't hurt to have it in the comics. And they would own it free and clear, without having to give Hasbro a cut. |

I would add that Hama was the one who created the dossiers. Hasbro just had everything generic, no characterization. GIJOE in 1982 would have probably burned out after a couple years without that. Hasbro never expected it to last as long as it did.
GIJOE would have been extremely different. Here is another thought. Hama was the last one Hasbro approached at Marvel. So was their next stop D.C.? an independent? Charleston Comics? D.C. was still publishing Sgt. Rock, G.I. Combat and "real" WW2 comics. How would that have influenced GIJOE? remember Kubert did the Sgt. Savage packaging art. Gotta love all those possible alternate universes.

I think this is the way to go. Especially since everybody makes a better GIJoe movie than GIJoe themselves. The best GIJoe movie to date is Captain America The First Avenger. When Cap goes into a Hydra base to rescue all those troops and Bucky and a battle breaks out. You had Hydra looking like Cobra driving tanks that looked like early HISS tanks. All the American troops each had something a little different about their uniforms. It was awesome. Heck yes, let Marvel make the next GIJoe movie, I bet it will blow the last 2 out of the water.

I have always considered Joe to be in the MU. Since Marvel did both original comic run and cartoon. Spider Man making an appearance in TF really solidified this form me. I didn't find out about the Hama Fury force until much later.

I think G.I.Joe would be a big hit if Marvel was to take over on the next film. One of the things that I think make Marvel movies so good is that they stay pretty true to the characters. When you see Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider Man, or any other of the Marvel Characters they look and act like the Characters you're familiar and grew up with. If Marvel would have handled G.I.Joe from the first movie, we would still have a toy line and we would have never had to go through squid head Cobra Commander or Cobra Commander being the Baroness' brother, the Baroness and Duke BS, Marlon Wayans, and Road Block being a ninja to name few.
