Too right. Just like politics, the news media gets to tell you what you think of everything. I remember they slammed the Star Wars prequels so much while just drooling over Matrix. So much so that it convinced many average movie goers that the Matrix was a bigger hit at the box office than Phantom Menace. Luckily reality, and the absolute suckiness of the Matrix sequels finally shut that crowd up.

Yea, I'm pretty sure this was a package deal. You don't make a "creation" movie without following it up with an evolution movie. I can't imagine them not following this up, especially if they have a story what can stand alone as a movie.
Profit margin is irelevant. I don't think a movie needs to make 3-4 times it's cost. The stated costs usually include cast, production, domestic distribution, and much of the initial promotion. Back end bonuses, royalties, etc all get split, and the studios have those based on percentages. So if it makes 250 Mil, and their payouts total 30%, they still make 10 Mil gross. I have no clue what sort of fees are included in these contracts, so I'm just throwing random numbers out. Does anyone know? If Paramount doesn't want to make another one, someone else will, just like The Narnia films are going to be finished, just not by Disney. Last edited by RuckusJr; 04-07-2009 at 02:28 AM.. |

Even funnier bit about "Hollywood Math" is that sometimes they'll end up spinning a movie as both a success and a failure.
I recall that several years ago, a particular movie (I can't recall which one) grossed quite a great deal (for the time) in box office returns, and studio execs went on-record talking about what a big hit it was. When the lead actor (if I'm remembering correctly, Eddie Murphy, though I don't recall which film exactly) then turned around and sued the studio because he hadn't received his percentage of the profit that he was contractually obligated to, the studio sent its' bookkeepers to court to try to explain why this movie that the studio executives had been crowing about hadn't actually made any money at all! Supposedly the records they produced were so complicated and bizarre that Ph.D's in Mathematics were having a hard time figuring them out, and turned out to include a multitude of costs that were actually for other movies altogether, and several that looked to be entirely made up. The Court ruled in favor of the actor, as I recall, but no one ever did make any sense of the records. As I recall, a similar situation may have happened with Peter Jackson and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. |

I don't think the live action Joe movie is even going to break 100 mil domestic. Having said that; a sequel is pretty much a certainty. LOL. Probably direct to DVD though... I mean we got 3 Starship Trooper movies. They need to get back that 170 million budget somehow; I doubt they are going to sell 20 million ROC Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow figs. LOL.

A film's budget does NOT, repeat, DOES NOT include anything outside of the actual production costs. As one mentioned, book keeping is crazy for Hollywood, due mostly to the fact that the distribution deals, profit payouts, etc are all directly related to the gross sales of the film.

Fast and the Furious 4 just made $72 million dollars on its' opening weekend....on a non-holiday weekend in April.
If that's any indication to go off of, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra will break $100 million on its opening weekend alone, regardless of quality. This recession seems to be the best thing to happen to Hollywood in years. Last edited by Jmacq1; 04-07-2009 at 08:50 AM.. |

that's a good point.
the 30's, during the Great Depression, was the 'golden age' of hollywood. people want a 'getaway.' that's good. seems like that's what this movie was made as. i think it's between $100 and $200. that's a good thing.
