The problem was that it was broke. Once TNG went to movies, they started going downhill (as evidenced by each successive movie doing worse the the previous). None of the other Trek series did anywhere near as well as TNG did. Nothing they came up with captured the heart of the Trekkie.
So what's the best thing? Bring back Kirk and crew except they're too old to play the roles so you have to reboot it.

Actually from what I've seen most fans pretty much give up after Deep Space 9. The dwindling audiences for each succeeding show seem to bear this out. I don't think anyone's arguing that TNG didn't have a big fanbase. But for one reason or another, that fanbase has abandoned the movies, which means it's time to start looking for a new fanbase while hopefully roping in some of those they lost.
Most folks seem to see Voyager as the franchise officially "jumping the shark" and Enterprise as the final nail in the coffin (even if I kinda liked the latter). The TNG crew has fallen victim to the same thing that ultimately led to the original series crew being supplanted in the films: Age. |

also, there is a rather large audience that knows what Star Trek is but has never seen a single episode or watched the movies. if you are going to do something new for them (and this movie is as much for a new audience as it is for Trekkies), you may as well do something with the version of the franchise that actually created what it is.

I'd also note again that the TNG crew aren't exactly spring chickens anymore. I love the original Star Wars cast, but does anyone really want to see Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Billy Dee Williams reprise their roles? It's getting to the same point with the TNG regulars. Even in the last couple TNG films, people were joking about how an android could gain so much weight.... "Senior Citizens in Space" doesn't sound or look all that exciting to most folks. Patrick Stewart is a great actor and the TNG era was great, but it's time for something different. Picard and his merry band of Starfleet Officers will no doubt continue their adventures through an endless stream of novels, comics, etc.... Last edited by Jmacq1; 03-10-2009 at 05:59 PM.. |

I fail to see how a new story using the TOS crew is any different from a new story using the TNG crew.

I know Kirk, Picard, Troy, Number 1 and Spock could all continue in novels and comics, but if the story is good.....people will come..... Any new Star Trek movie with whatever crew would be telling us a tale we have never seen on the big screen..... But really "Time for something Different" but using Kirk and Spock cant be called doing something different..... |

It's different in the sense that it's a new take on the characters. It's different in the sense that it's the first real return to these characters since the films, and the first return to a familiar yet unseen past in the Trek franchise (Enterprise went back to the past...into something that nobody recognized and didn't provide much of what the fanbase seemed to want). It's different in applying modern sensibilities and effects to the venerable franchise.
You can be "recognizable" and still be "different." That's what this film is. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight aren't the same as Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, but they're still Batman. Plus, TOS is different from TNG. "Different" doesn't always mean "completely new and original in every way" either. |

Hasbro is releasing the movie in August because the execs are sick of all the fanboys arguein and bitchin about the content/plot/story of the movie. So now we can argue and bitch about the release date. |
