You know they delayed the release of the next Harry Potter so they could release it at a time when there was no competition for it to be the #1 movie.
It's called being smart by the studio to release Joe in August, it'll be the only movie of it's type (action) out around that time and of that scale. Why would they put it up against the Abrams Star Trek? That's movie suicide. The Star Trek audience is the Joe audience, add in the thousands of rabid Trekkies and any movie is going to have a hard time getting anywhere near Star Trek. So why put it against it? The common view is that unless a movie opens in the Top 3 of it's weekend, then it's a dud and a failure (which is stupid, but that's the common view). Transformers is a known franchise. It has backing of numbers. And again, Transformers and Joe will share the same audience. So why release both movies at the same time to compete with eachother when it's the same studio doing it? That's just dumb business. You could apply the "conspiracy" logic to why Transformers isn't coming out against Star Trek.

How about this for a conspiracy theory...
With the economy in the crapper, a lot of families will not have the money to go to the theater several times a month this Summer. The studio used its magic 8 ball to look into the future and learned that the economy would soon turn folks into some serious tightwads. So they adjusted their release schedule as a way to trick folks into spending money on both films. That or they just wanted to give the movie its best chance at opening at #1. That would be hard to do if it were competing with TF2 and Harry Potter in July. |

The other reason for the release date is that they are competing for the same audience with Star Trek and Transformers. All 3 movies are from the same studio, why compete against yourself?
This way they get the action movie watchers at the beginning of summer (Star Trek), in the middle of summer (Transformers) and at the end of summer (G.I. Joe). Sounds like smart business.

Maybe they are releasing it at the end of summer because they read all the fan forums and need time to fix the movie and make it the way it should be ?

Hi, I wanted to bounce this off fellow tankers to see what they think.
I was looking at the new movie line figures and the posts of tankers. I gather the general consensus is they suck with poor sculpting. That said, I thought about how they have admitted to adapting "evolve" the Joe "mythology" so it will be more appreciated in the main stream audiences who will hopefully go see the show. I got to thinking about how Joe isn't coming out until August. Why August anyway? You got Star Trek and Wolverine coming out in May which I am having a hard time being patient about. Then Transformers 2 is the July 4th weekend. BTW that is the #1 spot for the summer block buster film to be slated. Therefore, we can pretty much be a buffalo nickel Transformers will be up to par. However, then we get to G.I.Joe and it is in the tail end month of August. Right before school starts. I am suspicious about what the studios think of this film otherwise they would try to slate it close to the July 4th weekend. Maybe a week or two ahead or behind Transformers release. Why so far away? I naturally go to the pessimistic explanation but I was hoping the folks out there may have a better theory as to what's going on. That said, I am scared Joe really is going to suck based on when the film is being released. I feel it is a sound theory based on how studios shuffle their films' release schedule. All I got to say is I have waited 25 years for this and if it sucks, we will not get another film unless they reboot it like how they did the Hulk movies. Maybe we will get Ed Norton as Snake Eyes and Christopher Walken as Flint. Thanks! not only that, but the August release date was set when they began filming it -- with a $170 million dollar budget. it makes far less sense to come to your conclusion, that Paramount would greenlight a $170 million dollar movie that they don't have confidence in and are just jetiisoning it in August, rather than the apparent, that they do have confidence that it can perform at that date. |

Star Trek...Star Trek......the last movie sucked so why would this one show any indication that its going to be a blockbuster? What has ST brought to the table that makes it such a powerhouse? Why would another movie fear this one? The reasons the studios put GI Joe at the end of summer (When school goes back in) is because they know they have a dud on their hands......Lets see a movie thats based on toys.....they want to sell those toys yet know kids will be in school in Aug.....given the kids only weekends to see the movie......They have no faith in the movie they spent money on. If they even had an once of faith that it was going to do go they would put it up against another Summer Blockbuster.......its called fear......thats why they tried to sue dude for reviewing their trailer.......fear makes you do dumb things..... |
