The idea would be so that people could connect and say "yeah, I've been there" (in his situation: bankrupt business, disillusioned with life, family leaving) and not necessarily make him more sympathetic but make him more grounded and understandable.
People need to have a motivation for why bad guys do what they do. That's one reason why the Joker in Dark Knight was so scary, there was no reason to his madness. The used car salesman thing also shows off the charisma and leadership skills that CC actually possesses. The guy was a used car salesman for christ sakes and he created/raised a worldwide terrorist organization. That's pretty damn impressive. Alot of terrorist groups/militia and even governments have leaders that started off the same way.

One thing I just don't get. Why did hasbro/hollywood alow the changing of cobra commander's appearance? That I would never get because it a certain figures is the same as the toys, then I'm sure many many people will be happy with it but come on, look at cobra commander! He doesn't look real but looks like hannibal lector with tubes! As for other characters, I can understand small changes but ripcord and cobra commander?? I have high expecation for the movie but I also am bracing myself for the bad in case the rumor is true about the movie is going to tank.

But by giving the complete backstory, you can see the evolution of the character. It makes how he was in World War 3 have that much of an impact because you can see how he went from being a used car saleman to the guy that would kill his own son.
I've said before that could write a good pysch paper on the behavior and changes in ol' CC. If he was just some guy hellbent on ruling the world, with no motivation, then nothing he does would surprise you. But knowing the backstory can go "wow, this guy was normal, now look at him". Good example of how power corrupts.

Let's say for the sake of conversation.. that Cobra Commander in the Movie Combat Heroes is the CC we see for most of the movie. Now we don't know what happens during the whole damn movie... but I can see (at the close of the movie) a man talking in the dark and the lights slowly start to come on and we get the Hooded Cobra Commander and/or Chrome Dome Cobra Commander. Just let it go for now.. geez we still have like 5 months before the movie and you know we probably won't get any GOOD spoilers until we go and see it!!!

but unfortunately...we'll get "plungerface" for most of the film with the final CC scene featuring the "traumaville-clear-helmet" looking down ominously at destro with his face full of "nanites" or "nanomytes" or "nanobytes" or whatever they're called......i don't even care enough anymore to look in the script for the actual name.
