I was thinking about bringing in more Joes for any future sequels and it occurred to me just how ridiculous a fan favorite like Shipwreck, or Spirit, or Quick Kick would look in real life. As much as I love them, it wouldn't work. I would like to see something at least close to their famous ARAH outfits, but I just don't know how that would come off in the really real world.

Which Shipwreck? The one from the Marvel comics? The one from IDW? The one from DDP? The one from Sunbow?

A big part of the mythos is the Ninjas. Most people take the Hama "lore" as "the Joe lore"!!
The diffrences are more subtle like the change in SS costume etc. I think Chu wanted to keep the pace fast in this film which is why it was more a jumping on point then a reboot and a nice place for this to be the start of something better... With CC as an example.... He carries on from ROC where he could not breath unaided hence why in the prison scene he quickly reapplies his mask.. with that in mind... no room for a cloth mask... this I believe is the reason why there was no cloth mask! I think if the second film is a big success Chu will have more say on what goes into the film and what doesn't! I think it's more to do with that then anything... Some of the choices probably came down to executives.... Although the amount of ninja scenes I believe is a result of that being about the only good part of ROC which they wanted to build upon, maybe even why they hired chu to begin with, nobody in their right mind can argue that the SE and SS scenes were not epic!!

In order for a movie to get made it needs to seem profitable. Tailoring a G.I. Joe movie entirely to one relatively small audience would never fly in a big hollywood production.
But besides that, I think the artists/writers in charge of the franchise at any given time have a duty to keep things modern and applicable. For instance, would I like to see quick kick in a live action movie? Yes, but as long as it's a completely new take. I don't see how a shirtless actor/martial artist would fit into a live setting without looking hokey. It worked with Bruce Lee back in the day. But I don't think it would fly today. Do I want to see justice done to the characters? Most definitely. Do I want to see live action versions of the cartoon/comic book frame for frame? Most definitely not. If you want to see incredibly accurate depictions of costumes and characters, you're better off looking at homegrown productions and fan films. They don't have to please anybody other than themselves. Otherwise you're in a long wait for a train that don't come. I'm happy to see people in the movie like grunt even acknowledged behind the scenes. Retaliation is far from perfect. But it's at least a nudge in a better direction. |

Question:
Why do you have to change Characters background to appeal younger generations? What is wrong with the original characters' background? For younger kids, they would not know the different between original nor new... this is the first time they expose to the characters anyways. It's just all about "macho" directors; they always think they do better than the original, but in fact, they all SUCK. Then you get called a fanboy for complaining that it's not GI JOE? I just wanna know why they try so hard to appeal it younger generations that it's not even the source anymore. Like for me I was always in love with the Vipers I don't see how a Viper trooper wouldn't appeal to younger kids? Last edited by AlleyViper47; 04-01-2013 at 01:10 PM.. |

THATS MY POINT! Like when did the source material become so bad that these kids won't accept it? I think thats what is hurting these movies is that they stay so far away from the source that it's not even the movie?

If they didn't change things for a new time there would be no Snake-Eyes, no Duke, no Cobra, no Storm Shadow....

Well like Shipwreck is a great example of 80's characters that won't work because you're not going to have a guy in a sailor suit and a parrot. But you can modify him to a degree without losing the ARAH fans. Maybe him even having him feed a pet parrot in the movie at some point. He doesn't have to be dressed as a sailor but that doesn't mean he can't be the guy we knew and loved.
I think between you, you guys have hit the nail on the head, some changes need to be made but its a matter of finding the balance!! Maybe shipwreck could be a sailor who works in a petshop by the docks who gets approached by snake eyes to join Gi Joe, Shipwreck could be a maverick who was booted from the navy for his unusual but successfull methods (could by how he got his nickname). Shipwreck tries to sell snake eyes a timber wolf whilst being punked by the Parrot and the rest they say is history. The joes will need to do a recruitment drive after Retaliation, could lead to a great Beachhead scene ala Gi Joe the Cartoon movie!

As long as they are true to the Spirit of the original character I have no issues.
Krang in a Fishbowl Cobra Commander and Marlon Wayans Ripcord are not true to the spirit of the original characters. SS, SE, Roadblock (even Sans Rhyming), Ret CC are.

Why didn't Captain America wear tights in The Avengers? Why weren't the Hulk's pants bright purple? Why didn't Bane use steroids in The Dark Knight Rises? Why wasn't bumblebee a VW bug in transformers? Why didn't anyone yell D-16 in Battleship?
Life's great mysteries right there. |
