Oh come on. Flint had a black shirt on. That's all that matters. They could have made it any color, but they went with black because that's what he's known for.
He was the Joe with common sense. When the rest of the team got wiped out, he knew they had to get the hell out of there. Roadblock got mad because he had been with the team longer and knew the guys better, but Flint knew they'd be dead if they stayed. And he did what nobody in the Marvel run ever had the brains to do, question why the hell they'd let Storm Shadow just walk in and help out. Especially guys like Gung Ho and Roadblock. So he's the practical Joe now. Even if he isn't one of the most accurate markmen on the team. There's your characterization. That filecard is just a resume. And if you honestly think that having Lady Jaye be a distant relative of Destro and inherit a castle is a better backstory than having her dad always look down on her because she was a girl and her excelling at everything she did to show him up, maybe you should just stick to watching Scooby Doo movies instead. |

Then i replied by mentioned an episode which which easily tops the amount of background in the movie. At NO POINT in the discussion was it EVER MENTIONED the quality of either story. YOU brought the amount of backstory given and i replied in kind. So why do you now reply COMPLETELY changing the discussion to now deal with the quality of the story used? Can we not randomly jump around to maneuver a joke or something? |

It did nothing to create any "depth" to Lady Jaye, it changed NOTHING of the relation of the two as characters, it was a nifty factoid stretched into a 30 minute cartoon. It would be like me indicating I was descended from George Washington. It's a neat factoid, but has no bearing on me or my motivations. (I'm not, but you get the drift of my example) Lady Jaye, in the movie, gave not only RELEVANT character history (she was among a family of multi-generational military officers) but a pressing motivation for BEING there (trying to impress her father who didn't really want to have a daughter to begin with). There is actually nothing to preclude the idea of her being related to Destro, it just isn't relevant or would have ANY impact on her character and how she functions. I'm not saying the film is perfect, but I DO think Roadblock and Lady Jaye DID get the better end of the character stick than they have in pretty much any prior media except the comics (which isn't a factor in the pop culture remembrance of the brand)

Tops what? In the episode, all it was revealed was that Destro and Lady Jaye had a distant ancestor.
It did nothing to create any "depth" to Lady Jaye, it changed NOTHING of the relation of the two as characters, it was a nifty factoid stretched into a 30 minute cartoon. We learn that she has Scottish blood, she can run without shoes on, she hates spiders, she knows that retreating is a good option. We learned a lot! Quote:

Im pretty sure you can build up a character based on relaying some simple info that can be used to build a picture. Quote:

It's nearly impossible to quantify the level of how generic this story is. Some one on Hollywood got paid for ...... THIS!? Anyone here can come up with something 10 times better and more unique in less than 5 minutes. ANYONE! Anyone here has a young kid? Tell him to come up with a story for why a girl is in a special forces unit and give him 5 minutes and post it. The only thing that story shows is how little work was put into this thing when it came to building up characters. "What do we say about a woman in GI JOE special forces? Oh yeah! She did it to impress daddy!" Come on..... some one is really going to defend that? Quote:

Hama liked the movie. The God Father approves, so characterization can't be that bad.

No I don't need Roadblock raping or rhyming I think you're taking this off the tracks a bit.
MY POINT is to create personality the GI JOES needed their own individualism to make the audience interested. Without it they are just a bunch of people in a movie. Creating interest was my key point and what made GI JOE great in the 80's was everyone had a story and their own look. In these movies everyone looks the same. |

Though I cant complain too much we all know that the director glorified his childhood and claimed that he only watched the DIC years. That's when Joes characterizations went out the window and lost most all of their identity as a Joint Operations Expert - Special Missions Force.
