I remember when Rise of Cobra came out, around the time my Joe fandom had waned a lot. I just wasn't nearly as into it as I used to be.
But then I watched the previews for Rise of Cobra, and I was interested. I saw commercials everywhere, 7-11 cups, and of course huge displays of all the figures and wow they looked great. Then I saw the movie and I had to have them all. And there were a LOT of figures. I'll admit that I actually enjoy getting caught up in the big marketing campaigns that the big blockbusters get. It makes it more fun, more of an experience, and makes it seem like the movie is just one big party for everybody to enjoy. Maybe that's silly, but I do enjoy it, and depending on the movie (Avengers for example) getting caught up in the big marketing hoopla makes me feel like a kid again. And now there's Retaliation, and there's not much. There's the commercials of course, but not really any extra marketing aside from figures. No 7-11 collector cups or anything. Even with the figures, there's not nearly as many and thus no huge displays. And I get it. Rise of Cobra underperformed and they overestimated how well it was going to do, thus all the extra marketing and the huge flux of figures, playsets, etc.. Clearly they didn't want to take the risk with Retaliation, and I get it. But the kid in me can't help but feel at least a little saddened that a good live action G.I. Joe movie can't generate a good amount of buzz, not necessarily as much as the Avengers, but at least enough to justify the huge marketing that Rise of Cobra got and then some. All in all, I remember having a blast back in 2009 hunting for all the figures and to be honest, Rise of Cobra got me fully back into G.I. Joe again. I hope that despite not as much marketing, kids are able to know about and experience Retaliation, and hopefully enough of them will beg their parents to buy them lots of Joe figures to show Hasbro there's a future past this movie. |

For what it's worth there was a bit of that back when the movie was originally supposed to open last summer. I had a bottle of Heinz ketchup for a while with an ad for this on it etc.

They're cutting costs. I did see a bus in NYC with the movie painted all over it a few weeks ago.

I don't know, I think from a purely marketing sense, I think Paramount was as aggressive (if not more so, TBH) in pushing this film as they were with RoC.
At least with the channels I tends to watch (Spike, Military, History, A&E and their offshoots), I haven't gone the last week and a half without stumbling across several ads. So I suspect it isn't so much the marketing isn't as "big", it is simply more focused in demographics that are apt to see the film (where as RoC was everywhere trying to get everyONE to see the film)

The only area I'm seeing a difference is in the amount of product at retail, but I think that applies to everything now because they don't want this lingering at Ross and Marshalls for the next 3 years. As far as TV ads go, I see a commercial for it virtually every time I turn on the TV.

I agree with this sentiment completely (about there not being as much of a big marketing push for Retaliation) I really wish Retaliation had all of the wild marketing that ROC had. Wide distribution of lunchboxes, t shirts, kiddie toys, posters, you name it. And just like you I too miss collecting a massive push of action figures. But hey you can't get it all I suppose.... because we got a much much better movie than ROC in terms of Joe-ness and I suppose that's what really matters in the end.
I will give paramount credit though for doing one thing just as big as they did with ROC if not bigger and that's an aggressive TV ads campaign as well as internet behind the secenes character profile and special look videos. It looks like it's doing well for it too. On Friday the movie made over 15 million dollars in that day alone, and considering this movie cost 50 million less to make than ROC that's not bad AT ALL.

The licensing sucks. I love to buy the 'making of' books. Sometimes even kids books... if they have cool pictures. Nothing for Retaliation.

When marketing came out big time for Rise of Cobra I think they were making a big deal out of the actor starring as Storm Shadow since he's kind of a big deal in his home country
