Well the exit score is an A which means good word of mouth. Just saying.

If you take away the trolls the majority of average Joe fans enjoyed it from what I have seen, so with the right kind of word of mouth no reason to doubt we will get a third installment!!
I will be seeing it a 3rd time saturday 6th but this time at IMax!

Basically, it's a rating of audience satisfaction of the film. As such, it tends to have that "awesome or suck" valley. In general, anything less than a B is considered a "poor response" to a film. "A"s are films that the people who saw them greatly enjoyed the film, more or less. GI Joe 2 got an A-, same as Olympus Has Fallen. A Good Day to Die Hard got a B+ (okay, but not super awesome). For the record, I think RoC also got an A-

If it doesn't pull in $50+ million by the end of the weekend it'll be considered a disappointment. Box Office Mojo tracking or not, I'd say it's far from a sure thing, especially with Sunday being a "family/religious" holiday more so than "let's go see a movie!" holiday.
Probably going to have a huge dropoff next weekend though. The audience I saw it with (and it was a full house) seemed to enjoy it well enough, but that doesn't necessarily mean much.

Yet, the movies you just listed all got terrible reviews, once they were really released. We've heard so many times about how well a movie tracked, yet it comes out and gets terrible reaction. Just look at the films listed at that site. Almost all of them tracked well, but a good portion of those are considered bad-terrible and didn't do very well.
Retaliation will likely end the weekend with around $50 million. Movies typically make around 1/3 of their domestic box office in their opening weekend. Unless they're terrible (larger fraction) or amazing (smaller fraction). Retaliation will drop off rapidly. I think it'll end up making less than $150 domestic. It'll fall into the whole "was it a hit?" debate...just like ROC. The cast, costumes, and director may have changed, but it's ROC all over again. |
