Here is the difference. The studio is an aggregator. They bring in a property (story and rights), a producer, a director, talent, and crew. Generally speaking none of these people are employees of the studio. Those individuals are contractors. So when I say back end participation I am talking about the cut these individuals take off the bottom line. In many cases it is significant. It was widely reported that Robert Downey Jr. was paid a reletively small salary for the Avengers, and he did this because he got some massive back in the deal that turned out to be very lucrative for him, at the expense of the studio. And while the percentages they take on merchadising may be small, those are streams that very often live beyond the earning potential of the film, and often times have a higher profit margin. Quote:
Do you work for a movie studio? While doing so might make you more qualified in making these statements, it also makes me doubt the veracity since it's often in studios' best interests to downplay or outright lie about how much money they're making (as CA points out above). In fact, many studios have notoriously tried to do so to avoid paying that "back end" the amounts they're entitled to.
I work very near to film finance, but not for a studio. I will say that Hollywood Accounting is not as bad as producers and especially actors think. The major studios have way too much to lose by defrauding their partners. Their entire business model is based on being able to bring in the talent and crew necessary to make a movie. Screwing folks over diminishes their ability to do that. And while their profit margins are razor thin, and the source of their profits is increasingly not the box office, those margins are stable. |

Retaliation opened number 1 in Japan... "'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' had a decent opening weekend in Japan and secured 1st place on the box office chart. It did a little better than its prequel and is aiming to crack the 1 billion Yen mark."
