It was my understanding that the prison was a privately owned facility where they dealt with exceptionally valuable bad guys. Probably they were paid a certain amount to hold him and if he died they wouldn't get paid. The warden probably would have been cool with adding a stuffed and mounted Storm Shadow to his collection but it probably wouldn't have been a profitable.

Finally Richard Roeper is the weak link in team Ebert team. He will never be a Siskel, despite what he tells himself in the mirror every night.

Roadblock was a Sergeant Major in the movie which is an enlisted rank. Lady Jaye quite clearly had Captains bars on when she was in her service dress which is an officer. Therefore, Lady Jaye outranks Roadblock. I'm not exactly sure about Flint but I'm certain he was an officer as well and would also have outranked Roadblock.
I have been active duty military for the past 18 years so I think I know a thing or two about rank structure. And again, it's obvious that once they're attacked, the GI Joe team is no longer an active military unit--they are renegades. They are disavowed. They are, essentially, vigilantes. Therefore, they HAVE no official military structure. Even if Lady Jaye or Flint would "outrank" Roadblock in an official context, it's clear from their dialogue and actions that Roadblock has (if you'll pardon the pun) been around the block a few times more than Flint or Jaye has, and would be more resourceful and better fit to lead. Shit, Lady Jaye even openly tells him, "You're our leader now," which says, to me, "Even if I officially outrank you, you're more experienced than I am, so you should take command right now." When Duke and Roadblock are having their witty banter, Duke says at one point, "I officially outrank you," which obviously says "I might outrank you but you're older and more experienced than I am." Also I'm pretty sure Flint isn't an officer yet--one of the DJ Cotrona interviews had him being pretty firm that Flint wasn't an officer and was still green. This is portrayed by him disobeying orders at the beginning and always second-guessing his commanders. |

My biggest Nit Pick?
Involving N.Korea. Seriously? With the current situation globally, why the fuck would you want to even mention N.Korea and Nuclear Weapons. If that isn't enough, making them the laughing stock of the whole film (first scene/Nuclear Summit). Seriously who's idea was this? Fckn idiots. This is total aside, but during the cold war nobody had a problem when the nemesis was Russia....Rocky IV, Red Dawn, War Games, The Day After, etc.....why has that changed? Open question. |

GI Joe has never been known to follow "traditional" military as far as rank goes. Outside of Hawk, those in command were placed in charge based on the mission, just like in Retaliation.
Go back to the OG13, Steeler should have been 2nd in command because he was an Officer. But most of the time early on, Stalker, who was a Sgt was second in command after Hawk . Only time I remember Steeler being in charge was the introduction of the Oktober Guard in the comic. The cartoon kinda got back to rank making a difference, when Flint laid it out to Beach Head about the chain of command....Hawk, Duke(an NCO), Flint(an Officer), then Beach Head.

My strange, I suppose, thought was that Snake Eyes emoted better in the first movie. In this one, there was more OF him and his martial arts were more on display, but in ROC, I somehow 'felt' more of his determination, loyalty....even that pat on Scarlett's shoulder felt more connected than anything in Retaliation.
I don't like what happened to Firefly (for a sequel) and, AGAIN, WHY WHY WHY is it only five characters in the upwards of 85-character- universe (I ballpark) in both movies? Can we have a team of at least 15 important Joes?? |

Roadblock being called ‘Block’ because I kept thinking they were saying ‘Rock’
The fact that I know a lot of people who won’t go see the film because of critics. Cobra Commander needed more screen time. Also, I got asked questions after I watched the movie like, ‘Why did the Commander leave Destro?’ My thoughts would be that at the end of ROC Destro honestly was not thrilled about what the Commander did to him; he was going to attack him until he was held back by that control switch. I don’t know maybe since The Commander didn’t have it he figured maybe Destro was still out to get him. *shrugs* A thought. That is really it; I loved the film and had a blast. I went into the theater not thinking of the negatives, but looking forward to the fun. Cobra Commander was one fine a** man and I couldn’t have been happier. XD; |

Nitpicks:
Most have been listed already. I didn't like how half the scenes in the credits were never in the movie. Maybe if they did show those scenes in the movie, there wouldn't be as many gaps in the plot. I too wish they would add more characters, but that is just not realistic in a movie to have 15 central characters. Look at the Hobbit. PJ has 15 main characters, but he is developing them over 3 movies. Plus he has Tolkien to fall back on to help develop them. Maybe Chu should have used Hama more if he did at all. Goodpicks: I liked Firefly's intro. Real badass. Almost made me forgive the sometimes Australian, sometimes rural south accent. Even though the Rza was basically a plot setter and narrator, I'm still going to buy the hell out that figure when released. I really liked the Nuclear missile launch scene. It made me think of War Games. I had a flashback to the early 80's when everyone was scared to hell about "the button." I wonder what I escaped to back then to help me deal with that threat. Overall, this movie is what it is. An action flick with good action that reminds us now and then that there is a plot.

Great recap, although, Payload is the highest ranking character amongst those that you had listed. Thankfully he does not have any command to the Joe Team.

I took the lone, "Destro, you are out", as meaning that Cobra Commander does not need his M.A.R.S industry branch as Cobra has their own now. Shortly after, Cobra was designing H.I.S.S. Tanks and Nukes.
