These reviews are sounding pretty good. I know there's a lot of hate for Rise of Cobra but I found it to be a good Joe movie until they screwed up The Baroness. The ending was too Star Wars but that happened after the fall.
I loved the Paris Pursuit sequence and the first appearance of Baroness was perfect. I really hope that, if the movies continue, her character can be fixed.

There are currently three reviews on Rottentomatoes.com
Review: G.I. Joe: Retaliation - Movie News | JoBlo.com Review: 'G.I. Joe Retaliation' Recruits The Rock to Ignite the Franchise and It Works | Review | Hollywood.com G.I. Joe: Retaliation Movie Review | ComingSoon.net Quite positive over all. Do I need to say "Spoilers" abound?

None of these reviews matter because it's not by a legit critic like Ebert.
That's a joke btw for the people that haven't read certain posts in other Retaliation review threads. I don't listen to reviews, I judge a movie on my own impressions, but these do bode well for the movie.

But none of those matter because a legit reviewer like Ebert hasn't reviewed it yet and as we know if a studio doesn't let a legit critic like him review it, it means they think the movie sucks.

It's highly doubtful that Ebert will review the film himself anyway. He has been very ill of late and farming out many of his reviews to Richard Roeper or other folks who work with him at the Chicago Sun Times.
As for his reliability. I like him very well because he's probably the one and only critic who can appreciate the generic foreign film all the other critics love, and then enjoy a horror movie without trying to compare the two. Most critics are incapable of doing this.

It must be sad, needing some guy you've never met's opinion to tell you how you feel about a movie. Here's a novel concept: Go see the movie yourself, and then decide how you feel about it. Plenty of people like movies that critics tear apart just fine. Plenty of movies that critics adore people find boring and pretentious. Taste is always subjective. Somewhere out there, there's probably someone for whom G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is their favorite movie ever.
And just because someone's done something for a long time and has a famous name doesn't make their opinion any more valid than anyone else's. The way I look at Ebert is this - if he likes a movie, or LOVES it, I'm almost guaranteed to enjoy it. It's almost certainly going to be a well crafted film. If he doesn't like it... well... It's a sign. Not the end of the world. I might still like the movie quite a lot, depending on the genre. It's a good indication either way. I will feel more confident about not wasting my money if he likes it; if he doesn't, I still might go... but maybe with lower expectations. I went to RoC with rather realistic (some would say low) expectations and thoroughly enjoyed it. I went to Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull with high expectations (ignoring any reviews whatsoever - I mean what could go wrong with Steven AND Harrison involved?), and felt like I was tricked into wasting $30 or so (gf ticket, food, etc.).
