I take that as a good sign. Most of the time I love what the Critics hate and hate what they like.

Plus I understand reviews good and bad, but it seems that everytime a movie is released, not just GI Joe but anything really, there is always someone hellbent on being against it, will waste their time and money to even watch it(when they could be doing something else), and will still review it. I see the movie as more of Jon Chu wanting to make a GI Joe movie rather than continuing ROC. ROC is mentioned, tied into, but just briefly. Sommers is doing non-GI Joe movies/projects and it's not like he wanted back in. I thought Retaliation was great and worth buying once it's released to home video. It's not the best movie I've seen but it's definitely one of the better movies I've seen within the past year. |

THERE WILL BE SPOILERS
Just got back and the one word that comes to mind is disappointed. Say what you will about ROC but if that movie had real guns, a better cast like this, and better costumes, people would have given it the love this movie will get. I"ll have to think long and hard about whether I will see it again in the theater. I agree with Almost all of the OP rant - but my main complaint is that this was Not a GI Joe movie. It was an action movie with some GI Joes in it - it wasn't the team. And if it wasn't a team, then at least give us some characters that we could care about. Rock was fine & Lady Jaye was good - but Flint was a waste - would anyone have cared if he was killed in the end? I doubt it bc there was no reason to like him. Heck - Mouse had more personality in his 2 minutes of film! I liked the SS-Zartan backstory nod to the Comics - but the way it was told played very poorly Willis was fine - but he seemed gimmicky to sell tickets. If they had more Joes, then they would not have needed him. I would have much rather had Gung-Ho, Beachhead, Falcon, Rock-n-Roll or any number of other Joes rather than "the Joe."

Just got back and liked it quite a bit. I tried to just forget ROC and watch this one as a new movie all together.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS FILM!
SPOILER ALERT TO SAVE YOU MONEY liked the first one. so if you did to, dont get your hopes up. 1. they postponed the release because viewers did not like that duke was killed so quickly. in reality they added one really cheap scene to try to make up for it. and from a viewers stand point they just wanted to prevent being overtaken by movies like avengers or spiderman with better plots to kill the chances of making money off of fans because those movies would have blown Joe outta the water. 2. the director was the guy that has done movies like step up 3 and justin beiber crap. seriously he had no experience with this kind of action franchise... unless you think a dance battle is action packed. so when storm and snake eyes fight the camara is too close to appreciate the choreography of the fight. imagine a camara only focusing on Neos arms in the matrix or having a close up view Jet Li's in any of his films. the movements were too fast for the camara to be soo close. it was a waste of what could have been an epic fight scene. other fight scenes like the cliff are drawn out and feel boring after a while. 3. The joes went from a fleet to just 20-30 joes total? and duke was the leader of all joes? what happened to the hundreds of joes that where higher ranked then duke? then the joes went to only 3 and an E9 is giving an LT orders? that makes no sense. then flint is constantly disobeying direct orders? that should not have happened EVER! WTF is that!? even if the viewer did not know who flint was a Joe never disobeys orders. 4. the plot was insanely vague. there are no back stories like the previous joe. there are no explanations of the toys or explosive bugs like the previous joe. no explanations of any other joes including Bruce willis' character or the guys he brings into the movie. the story jumped from one story to another without finishing the previous story. then storm is framed by Zartan? bad twist. 5. NO HUMOR AT ALL AFTER THE FIRST 15 MIN. 6. LADY jaye is nothing like how she was supposed to be in anyway. 7. we were introduced to all the characters in the first film then in the 2nd there was no intro to the characters in this film. we did not know anything about them. 8. giving the rock a big gun did not make up for the lack of story logic or taking away the original cast |

I greatly enjoyed Retaliation for what it was. It wasn't, nor was it ever going to be the next 'greatest film evah', but it was definately a fun watch, and worth the admission cost.
IMO, Chu NAILED an extremely difficult tightrope act here: he respected the source material, but made the concept accessible to those that weren't. He made an excellent balance between the most absurd elements and the most grounded elements of the brand. He kept some of the old Sunbow camp, but still treated the material with respect and made it fun. He balanced the ninja and military elements JUST right, so the film didn't lose a unique sense of identity. I like what he did with GI Joe, and I'd readily support him and the writers coming back for another. I do have a couple quibbles though: While I appreciate the brisk pace of the film, this is one instance I feel some of the cut material (especially the "bar scene" with Flint and the team as a whole) would have added to the film, especially in the case of Flint who is kind of just...there after the Joe Team Slaughter. That said, it is nice to see a big action feature which isn't stretching 2-3 hours, and the pace does keep things interesting and moving. Never once did the film feel like it was dragging itself out as is happening with too many "blockbusters". I'm not happy with how the team slaughter was handled because, well, they were all INTERESTING. Mouse and Duke played well off each other, and in general, I think the film would have been better had they stayed alive. To me, they "lost something" they managed to capture of the Joe team in those first couple action sequence. One thing that amused me was the prior events of RoC being referenced as the "Nanomite Wars". In a sense, it almost feels like instead of using the film as a concrete precedent, they used the IDEA of the events (akin to the idea of the toy line Hasbro tried to sell back in 2009). In a way, they presented RoC the way I think Hasbro wanted it presented back in 2009. I think my biggest frustrations aren't with the film itself, but with how things have been handled due to the ramifications of RoC: -The opening narration teases us with "RoC-style" art of pretty much everybody, rubbing salt in the wound that Hasbro went with such generic packaging and often inaccurate figures. -Because of the retail performance of RoC and its associated material, there is very clearly a hesitance to pushing this film, including from Hasbro with their lack of "film accurate" toys (of which, this film is WAY more "toy friendly" than any of Hasbro's prior film adaptations, IMO) All said, I will be seeing this film again (probably a couple more) and my enjoyment of the film has done a LOT to rekindle my interest in the toys (wave 3 can't get here soon enough)
