As I've said and as other people have said, it's Marlon Wayans in the movie that bothers me.
Do I have a problem with a black man playing a white character? Do I have a problem with asian actor as a black character? Etc.? Yes and no. There are certain characters, who, due to their iconic nature, in my mind, HAVE to be the race they are initially. If Steve Rogers was black, a la the Will Smith rumor, it'd be a completely different element to the story. I'm pretty sure that a down-on his luck african-american would have a different world view than a down-on his luck caucasian in the late 30's. And as someone joked, having a white guy as T'Challa just wouldn't work either. A white king of an Africa country? No. What if Storm from X-Men was a eskimo? Superman latino? Blade white? Those intrepretations are so iconic (and yes, I know Blade only became well known after the movies, but do you think it would have worked with anyone else other than a black actor?), that it should be that way. Minor characters, such as Ripcord (yes people, he's minor, deal with it. A fan favorite, a couple of shining moments, but he's a MINOR CHARACTER), and even the two Will Smith roles mentioned, James West and the Omega Man work, because people are not overly used to seeing that character any other way. In the end, my point, my opinion, is this. Ripcord being black= A-Ok! A Wayans in a Joe movie (that's not Keenan Ivory), just say NAY!!! Quote:
i have far too many real-life problems to deal with than to worry about the color of ripcord's skin in the movie. or the accelerator suits. or destro's casting. or snake eye's nationality. or joseph gordon levitt.
there are things that i wish werent...and things that i wish were....but nothing about this production makes my teeth grind like it does some here. i save that teeth grinding for when my car starts making funny noises. Good lord dude, how dare you be so normal, lolz!!! |

Listen to what your saying Man. It's the equivalent of saying "black people can't do the same things white people can"
UHHH....WHAT!?! Thats not what he implied AT ALL. That's Carl Weathers And Yes He would have made a great Stalker agreed. when he was YOUNGER. The continuity of GI.Joe is changed with every incarnation of GI.Joe. What's "well established" about that? this movie is based on the 80s incarnation. you know, the one thats THE MOST POPULAR. Only a person who is closed minded would say that someone being Black is a major issue. What if Jackie Chan played DUKE? you wouldnt care at all? What is it like living in a box? It's not 1985 anymore If thats the case, you gonna tell me if Hasbro changed the race and sex of ALL these 25th figs, you wouldnt mind, cause after all, its not 1985... if you ever created a character of your own, youd understand...id HATE it if one of my creations could only make it into a movie IF they changed something as integral as RACE and/or SEX

I voted Ripcord is a white guy because there are plenty of Black Characters they could have picked in his place instead of drastically changing an established character. (The Fact that a No Talent like Marlon Wayans is playing the part is the added kick in the junk) This combined with then choosing Heavy Duty over Roadblock shows how little respect they have for the 27 years of established Joe Mythos.
*Note: I am not an F'n Racist and I will not be dragged into that argument by Pinheads with the Race Card shoved up their asses. I grew in an area where I was the Minority so I have a view of what it is like*

That's my feelings exactly. Word for Word that is what me and my grlfriend said when we first heard of this. I mean Eddie Murphy made the transition for comedy to action, but not Marlon Wayans. |

Guys, guys....It's Hollywood, remember? We should know by now they screw with every IP they can get their smarmy little hands on. Remember Super Mario Brothers? No, I won't even do the list. We all know it by heart. I've given it all the energy I can, and I'm tired of being angry about it. I've accepted that it's not going to be G.I. Joe as we know it, because to expect anything more would be an exercise in futility. The most we can hope for is that nobody pees on John Turturro's head.

...... im DONE with this thread...I know Im not racist, I dont need someone trying to tell me I AM.
if you ever created a character of your own, youd understand...id HATE it if one of my creations could only make it into a movie IF they changed something as integral as RACE and/or SEX And for all the people who are implicitly comparing Ripcord to Wonder Woman or Captain America...please. Ripcord has had one action figure in his own name (there was a second with a different code name) and featured in a few issues of the comic. As was said above, he's hardly iconic. It might be slightly puzzling, sure, but to believe that it's a huge violation of the character is just silly. It's not necessarily racism, but it's not necessarily not racism either; at the very least it is yet another example of the silly fanboy tendency to cling to the first version of a story they encountered and decide that it must be the only correct one, ever. Comic books reset their characters constantly (sometimes for better, sometimes for worse) and no comic property (with the exception of Sin City, which was great, and 300, which sucked both as a comic AND a movie, so at least was consistent) has made it to the screen without change. Batman was changed. Superman was changed. Wonder Woman will be changed. Iron Man was changed. X-Men was changed. The list goes on, and will go on, because the live action film version of G.I. Joe will change, too. I just hope it's even half as good or successful as some of those I listed above.

Iron-Man and X-Men were successful because for the most part they were faithfull to the source material. I would compare this more to Ang Lee's Hulk

They were? So Stark met Jim Rhodes in the Jungles of Vietnam after Rhodes was shot down? Rhodes distrusted him and thought he was an enemy? Iron Man's suit powers were based on magnets? Obadiah Stane committed suicide? In X-Men, Rogue was first adopted by Mystique? Absorbed the powers of Ms. Marvel? Also absorbed the memories of whoever she touched? Why wasn't it Kitty Pryde or Jubilee who Wolverine acted as the protective father/older brother of instead of Rogue? Why? Please. BOTH of those movie franchises have made drastic changes to their precious "source material," and fanboys whined and yelled and squealed about it, just like they always will, and the movies went on to be successful and to rake in the cash.

No they updated them but they did not change things DRASTICALLY! The amount of changes in this moves outdo all the changes made to all of them combined.
