So, we all want figures like Cover Girl, Lowlight, Ripcord and others. Well, we seem to not be getting Rip and CG because of their appearance in the movie. But what about Lowlight? Zarana? Monkeywrench? Night Vipers? Unless they're revealed to be in upcoming line-ups soon, it's a safe bet we won't see them untill after the movie craziness (though some could appear, as Hasbro has promised some regular characters in the movie line for us die hard collectors). Now, thing is, there are some major heavy hitters still unrealeased, as well as a plathera of other characters from the comics, cartoons and newer characters who could also be made, but why would Hasbro hold back some of the original 13 on single cards, and keep fan-requested characters unreleased?
To release them later. I know, I know, "DUH, SE-JN, we know that." but I think they're deliberately holding off certain characters because they need heavy hitters when the "Modern Era" line starts back up again after the film "dies out". Hasbro will want to bring us hardcore, devoted few happy an re-interested with the "new" line after the movie, and the best way to do that will be by offering figures they KNOW we want. What say you? |

sounds like a good marketing strategy, and they are in the business of making money, not caving to what die hard fans relly want, right?

Seems simple enough, I buy it.
Let's just hope that's what is going on because it would suck to have this amazing line die off before we get some of the really cool figures we all want..... ....like Dee-Jay *OUCH*OUCH*OK*OK*OUCH*OK....sorry, I thought it was funny.

It's not a total shit idea. I wouldn't put anything past the guys at Hasbro. But figuring it all out is like kicking yourself in the ass because you bought this figure or that one when Hasbro released them again with a new figure in a comic pack. You know, like saying to yourself: "You know, if i hadn't bought the single carded Beachhead, then the Beachhead/Mainframe comic pack would have been a great buy!" There's absolutely no reason a figure that was released on a single card couldn't have been the greatly-improved version we got in a comic pack or a DVD set when it was originally released. Why did Serpentor not have his hood on the single card, but the latest DVD pack version has it? And still it has shitty sculpting. Stringing the collectors along is what this line (and many, many others) is all about. Not just sticking it to collectors, but sticking it to new collectors, as well. We have a new version of Armoured Cobra Commander coming out in a comic pack to sate people who didin't have the chance to pick up the original single-carded release of the figure AND it's the more comic-friendly Fred version. (Personally, I prefer the non-hippy with glasses and Fred version we got on the card.)
This is a problem we have as collectors. We look at this line as though it were only here to serve the kid of the 80's who wants to recapture that old feeling. But Hasbro (along with Mattel and He-Man or Hasbro with Star Wars) is looking at this as though it could possibly be a rival of those '80s figure lines and the profits that came with them. We get repacks because they want to satisfy collectors that are just now coming around to the line, as well as their notion that kids are buying these toys and becoming new fans. Some do. I don't doubt that. But, there's a reason that Wal-Mart has an entire video game section in the electronics department while we remember the days when G.I Joe figures filled an entire aisle at Toys R Us and now only have 2 or 3 rows of pegs on a single aisle at your local box store. What we, as collectors of a dying art, have to remember is that the format is fading. We aren't collecting Barbies or lincoln logs or legos or stuffed bears. Things like play-doh and puzzels are not going away; but action figures very well might. Hasbro will flood the aisles with G.I Joe movie merchandise, just like the manufactuers did with Hulk or Dark Knight or Iron Man or (insert tie-in name here) and they'll get burned for doing it. I wish kids today weren't pigeon-holed into plaing with things that totally deprived them of imagination past the age of 5. It's like the episode of South Park here the moral of the story is that spending that muh time learning how to actually play the guitar will have far out-lasting benefits than does playing Guitar Hero. At the end, knowing how to play a video game won't get you laid when you're 22. Knowing how to actually play a guitar is a much further step in that direction. I might have looked too deep into the topic, but that's what I think. Last edited by Devil King; 12-18-2008 at 05:19 AM.. |

Figures like Night Viper will likely be part of the movie line. Remember, you only have so many characters in the movie. If you create an "expanded universe" like Kenner did with Aliens, or what Hasbro did with the allspark you can do characters that wouldn't normally be done. Plus, Hasbro doesn't want to eliminate us. We are the core audience. We are the toy addicts, hear us roar!
And Night Viper in movie style wouldn't be that far off. I don't think they'll be jade colored though. But Night Viper could be painted Tiger Force colors and it would still sell. As for the Dreadnoks, who knows. I mean Hasbro could release a modern Monkeywrench and say he was "one of Zartan's allies" in the pre Cobra days or something. |

hasbro could be holding off on heavy hitter figures for when the movie line is over, it does make sense, to draw us all back into the line, but its hard to say, i guess we will have to wait and see. i am hoping though that while both lines are running, we will get the figures we are wanting, but it would also be nice to save some good stuff after the movie line, keeps everything fresh and exciting.

No. Getting laid isn't the peek of ones life. But knowing how to is a sure 'in'. Thanks for misunderstanding my point. I can't play the guitar, but I've gotten laid. I'm just saying that investing that much time in playing a video game would be much better served in learning how to play a real instrument. I play the piano and think that every well-rounded person should know how to play an instrument. I think everyone shoud play an instrument, speak at least one foreign language and have a basic understanding of history.

I could see characters like Monkeywrench and Night Viper movie style, for sure. But something tells me we are going to see cameos of characters already made as figures in the flick, and A LOT OF REPACKS during the movie run.

What heavy hitters do you mean? It looks like all the heavy hitters have been released.....the only major character not yet released is Mindbender, but he's coming up in the first half of 09.
The only possible major character missing I'd say is Zarana. |
