...to get a new generation into G.I.Joe and the Modern Era line?
Okay, here are some facts: 1- The modern era is incredibly popular, especially with longtime fans. 2- Movie toy tie-ins don't generally do very well after the movie has come and gone BUT they do get some new fans into the franchise. 3- The Rockslide lacks detailing compared to other modern-era vehicles (it's a prototype but still...) So here's what I was thinking. The Rockslide is intentionally left less-detailed then the other 25th vehicles. The idea is that kids go and see the movie, like it and want movie toys, they go to the store and see the Rockslide and sitting next to it is the Armadillo. Which would you buy? The kids look at it and go "hey, this wasn't in the movie" and they start looking around and see all these other G.I.Joe's that weren't associated with the movie. They see Modern Era, Comic Packs, Resolute and movie figures. And they realize how cool the Modern Era figures are. So they start buying up those as well. Voila, new convert to G.I.Joe. Hasbro's not stupid. They know what they have on their hands. The movie can only benefit the existing line, even if it bombs. As long as it brings in some new fans, then it's a plus for Hasbro. They won't lose any of the existing consumers they have now. Resolute and the movie are perfect ways to acquire new fans. So are the movie toys going to be bait to hook the new fans into the rest of the Joe line? Are they intentionally being kept "lesser" so that the Modern Era toys can impress on the toy shelves?

My guess would be if there's any reason less detail and effort will go into these it's simply so that Hasbro can set a lower price point since they're going after a demographic with less disposable income (IE Kids who only have the money their parents allow them to have). Theoretically there should be little or no "modern era" on the shelves when the movie hits because Hasbro will have the line on hiatus... but of course there will always be left overs.

Never thought of it that way before, sounds like you could be onto something there.

I was buying the movie Transformers and saw the ones not in the movie and was like, "That suck, why would I buy a re-tooled movie line figure that wasn't even in the movie?" Granted, kids don't know or care about the difference, but I felt like they were just trying to get me to buy Transformers because they were part of the movie line. I sold them all after that and haven't bought one since (cept at Comicon). I don't think I'll be buying the movie line anyways, though.

Well back when I first got into Beast Wars I had limited knowledge of G1 but because I liked Beast Wars so much I hunted down G1 episodes so I think this makes sense to me.

That's right. Let the non-collector gobble up all the movie stuff so Hasbro will think the line is very strong. Strong enough to rerelease Terrordrome

I think the "Modern" line is clearly Hasbro's long term line to maintain strong sales and keep the brand relevant in the toy aisle during the void inbetween big media tie-ins like the movie or new cartoon. Hasbro expects kids to buy the Joe movie toys in drove, and if they then stay on for the modern line, that is great. if not, Hasbro has strong sales with the modern line with collectors and will target kids again with a cartoon and toyline or just the next movie.

The movie line is clearly designed to bridge the gap. So that kids and collectors are on board.
Although kids and collectors are ALREADY on board, nothing gets more people into a franchise these days than movies. Especially ones with trendy young actors, all black suits and a token Wayans brother. SMELL THE CASH! |

I think Hasbro is underestimating kids. When I was 7, 8, 9 years old, I understood the difference between toys based on movies and toys based on other things and I wasn't confused by where things came from.
I was reading one of the questions to Hasbro on another site earlier today and they said the reason they're not releasing Cover Girl, Heavy Duty, and some others is because they want to make movie versions first to avoid confusion. Is it really that confusing to figure out which are which? Then again, maybe I could be giving kids too much credit now. |
