So, what we have learned from this interview: - it has nothing to do with being a soldier STRIKE ONE - it is not based in any kind of reality STRIKE TWO - in his own words, Leavitt describes the film, overall, as, "what it's like to be an action figure." STRIKE THREE In this day and age, with everything going on, they give us this? I personally think this film is going to suck. Really badly. The signs are all there. Just this interview alone is a good sign of that. One of the main actors doesn't say one positive thing about it. |

This is a movie about toys. One with a fantastical mythology. There is no way Hollywood or the public will take this property seriously. I mean every critic and potential audience member are going to look at this property as a kid's toy. How do you market that?
Most of us want a serious treatment of GI Joe? What world are we living in? No one is going to treat this seriously. It's going to have gobs of comedy and will probably be borderline campy. At its best, GI Joe could be a James-Bond spy thriller with bigger than life megalomaniacal villains, death-rays, inescapable traps, exotic locations, secret lairs, futuristic gadgets, and incredible vehicles. At its worst, it could be a campy super action thriller. Austin Powers meets The Mummy. Gaelinic

I respectfully disagree. Did you see "The Dark Knight"....? Batman was once regarded as a campy old 1960's TV show and comic book and now look how seriously it's taken. I know it wasn't The Dark Knight that was soley responsible for this because of the Burton films coming out previously, but the Dark Knight definitely proved that something as silly of a concept as a guy dressing up as a bat to fight crime CAN be dramatic and serious. And, what's more dramatic and serious than a film about the threat of a terrorist organization in times such as we're living right now?

De-Americanized De-Militarized (meaning more sci-fi) De-Dramatized (meaning it'll be campy) If I ruled the Universe, I'd horrify American audiences with the content of my Joe film: Basically every other country and most global corporations as well have come under the control of COBRA and the opening scenes of the movie set up the notion that the United States stands alone against COBRA and their puppet nations, that GIJOE is America's last line of defense against the forces of COBRA that are actually doing things like bombing American cities. Imagine "Red Dawn" with the COBRAs substituted for the Russians and Cubans and GIJOE having to do things like INVADE NEW YORK CITY and fight street-to-street to liberate it from COBRA armies. It would lose hundreds of millions of dollars. Americans would be too offended and upset by it. The rest of the world would cheer for COBRA but probably wouldn't see it anyway because the film would focus on American military doing their darndest to preserve American society while caught between greedy politicians and a near-invincible enemy. Probably they decided the film had the best chance of making the most money if it was:

I don't even know what to say. If he mocks it and laughs at it looks like he'll give a real gut-wrenching performance of the most loved/hated character of our beloved comic/show/toys.
I am not expecting much. I hope to be surprised. I hope it is not campy like Transformers where 5 large, robotic warriors are in the backyard of a boy who is having mommy talk about his "happy time." How lame. Bring on Resolute!!! |

First off it's because of the current climate that, I think the want to distance it and not make it a movie that glorifies the army or makes War look cool.
Huh? Why would Americans think that is offensive? It sounds like the ultimate in "america is the bestest nation in the world" propaganda. The other countries wouldn't be rooting for Cobra, they'd be the ones offended, that they're being represented as puppets of an evil power and that America is the only one who can save the world.
