I mean there is no need to smother a movie with too many characters. You can start introducing characters in the following ones but not too many like in X3 which was a suck fest.

The difference between X-Men and G.I.Joe is that the latter can perfectly be realistic because there is no need for supernatural elements to be involved. Of course we've had them in the toon and in the comic, but they aren't essential, unlike with X-Men. If Storm can't control the weather, she wouldn't be Storm anymore (I use her as an example because it is the most "supernatural" of the mutant powers from the X-Men team from the films).
SO... with G.I.Joe, you can definitely stick to realism. Even the "masked" aspect of Cobra wouldn't be something out of this world, as there HAVE been masked organizations/vigilantes. KKK's, the Bald Knobbers, etc. And, most certainly, terrorists nowadays hide their faces whenever they film themselves with hostages. Now... realism isn't a synonym for "boring". That's up to the filmmaker. Sommers says he sees the film as a mix between X-Men and Mission Impossible. I can see what he's getting at: X-Men, as in: You have a team of super-agents where each has a special ability. ie: Snake Eyes is the silent ninja/commando. Mission Impossible, as in: The whole global/geopolitical implications, the international intrigue, the secret missions, etc. You know. SO... In my very humble opinion, I'd rid myself of anything that would make this film/series of films fantastic. Show that a simple man like Cobra can become a world menace. That isn't to say we can't have some super-sophisticated, state-of-the-art, hi-tech elements in it. I'm counting on that. I'm just hoping it isn't some stupid device like the one Magneto has in X-Men 1. See, that's a film that wasn't bad at all, but boy, was Magneto's "master evil plan" not stupid? "Turn humans into mutants"... sheesh. Make the film serious and realistic... but also FUN. It can be done. And keep the humor in place. Don't saturate the film with 30 jokes per minute like in Transformers.

Sadly I have little hope of the Joe film being really entertaining. I'm NOT a Sommers fan in the least, his films are way to campy and not in a good way.
Of course I'll still be there opening day...just with low expectations. |
