Doing the most ridiculously cursory skim of it, I think it would be a decent movie. Certainly no worse than the last one.

Haven't read the whole thing yet, but so far so good. I like the use of multiple Joes (Keel-Haul, Mainframe, Doc, etc) doing their specialty (much better than the first). Definitely like the introduction of the Crimson Twins. According to the script, there's actual Joes vehicles in use. Overall, it looks good. This coming from a hard critic of RoC. Let's just hope that the production doesn't go overboard.

It's a very good fan effort, but has some severe deficiencies.
GOOD: Weather Dominator Lady Jaye/Destro related Dreadnoks Very good dialogue Tomax and Xamot BAD: A lot of action, but it never gets bigger as the story progresses. No real drama or suspense Climax is anti-climactic Some of the dialogue doesn't work (Cutter hat is simply irrelevant) Space ending good idea, not great, don't like the angle the movie took but overall the writers are clearly competent. |

Yeah it's a little rough in a few places, but with a few minor revisions I think this would be a GI JOE film I would be TOTALLY onboard with.
The thing that I love about it, is that it FEELS like GI JOE, even though it exists as part of the movie continuity. It performs a delicate balancing act between the first film, the cartoon, and the comics. In the end it though despite the flaws, it does capture the spirit and essence of the things we love. It does some brilliant recasting, I mean Springfield, c'mon that's cool. I've always sort of had a problem with the idea of Springfield in previous incarnations, I mean how could anyone really not know about it on a large scale... But here, totally plausible hiding place. The weather dominator? Never did I ever think it would look credible on paper, but man, it totally works. It comes off completely legit and not at all camp. Tomax and Xamot as leaders of the green movement, at first I was like, eh, but then, you know that totally works. It feels right. Action-wise, I do think it does escalate throughout the film, but just because it doesn't necessarily try to constantly outdo itself doesn't make it bad. When you attempt to build ever intensifying action, you can easily end up with something like "Revenge of the Fallen" where you're simply assaulted, instead of experiencing a story. But if it was a screw up and this is some sort of primitive draft, then I would expect the action sequences to be ramped up, and their current incarnations are merely placeholders. With regards to vehicles I get the impression we might see reinterpretations of our classics, for instance the WHALE in the script. I expect it would look like this: http://en.wikivisual.com/images/7/7d/USN_hovercraft.jpg Bring that on! That would make an awesome toy! |

and Springfield was great, but it also is one of my greatest sources of contention with the script. having Cobra Commander essentially just walk out of captivity just doesn't sit well with me, his "escape" needs a little more drama to it IMO. and I'm not sold on the turning prisoners into the Cobra army angle. but I love the idea that he orchestrated the building of Springfield from the get-go in anticipation of the possibility of being captured, I just wish it was executed with a little more drama and excitement. but the presentation of Cobra Commander is flawless and his dialogue exactly what a live action CC should be. my next biggest gripe would be that, even though the Joes are a team and the movie is a team effort, I still think the movie needs to be pushed forward by a character, specifically Duke, and although the characters are presented excellently, the characters all kind of blend in to each other as far as guiding characters. |

I don't know, I must have different taste in action films because I thought the script blew. The characters have no depth, no edge to them. The dialogue lacks substance. The script is full of campy one-liners. And the action has no suspense because the characters never really appear vulnerable. I thought the scenes were strained. Oh well, I guess I'm a less forgiving audience.
