Do you think GI Joe jumped the shark and if so when? There have been a number of things I did not like about the tv show but once the movie hit that is when it went down hill real fast. The whole Cobra La premise just turned me off of Joe and I couldnt watch anymore. Today was the first time I saw the DIC series and that pretty much sucked too.

I think the comics flirted with the Fonzie move ever since Cobra island, but the speedboat went full throttle ahead when Ninja force arrived. I liked the continuity best when Cobra was a underground and subversive organization, not a weapon peddling nation.

I was going to say something clever about Fonzie, but Moses beat me to it. Then again, he IS Moses, so how can I be mad at him?
Seriously though, I think at least the toyline just became utterly ridiculous when they had stuff like Eco Warriors and whatnot. As a kid, I LOVED that stuff (especially because it was coming out right as I was eight, and I just ate that stuff up. But looking back at it... man, those figures make my eyes bleed.

Snake Eyes becoming a deus ex machina, especially in the 90's. The RAH comic ending before Hama could reverse the brainwashing for Baroness, Billy, Destro, and Storm Shadow as intended, Battle Corps having repaints everywhere, anytime joes were made with less articulation than standard, 2002 Storm Shadow never receiving a well made o-ring treatment, and Joe Casey turning America's Elite into Ninjasville.

I hate to say it, but when they focused on everything ninjas it all started to go downhill. I was never a fan of Storm Shadow being a Joe. The whole story of Snake Eyes and Storm shadow would have been better if they left it at "once as close as brothers, now bitter enemies" rather than him defecting to the Joes. Then being brainwashed when they realized that he was better off as an enemy for Snakes Eyes, then coming back. And then all the figures started coming with day-glow weapons. Ugh...

The DIC series is the best Joe related media ever, back in the early 90's I would get up on Saturday mornings, flip on the USA network, do four or five bong hits, and watch the DIC toon. Good times, good times.

Id have to say, for me, when all the figures kept getting repaints (IE: Slaughters Marauders, Tiger Force, Python Patrol), I think this was about the same time the DIC series was about to start (after the movie, which I actually like, Cobra La or not).
I would look at the figures from time to time after this, but it seemed like everything became neon green and orange. Funny, but I remember going back a while later, and saw the Star Brigade figures and just thought "wtf"... and never went back.

I agree.
I think it went too far when GI Joe was packaged in Neon orange uniforms with neon pink weapon systems. I couldn't stand the cheap gimmicks either (Spring loaded weapons, light up guns, sonic fighters, etc). Hasbro needs to remember that weapon systems are usually gray or black. Heck, I am willing to tolerate brown if it's in keeping with desert camouflage. |
