I don't know if Joe has 'jumped the shark' or not, but Snake Eyes sure fought the hell outta one once!
We're looking for a few good (bad) snakes for the Tank RPG game!

I think as far as the toyline, it happened the first time they repainted an existing vehicle. Off the top of my head I couldn't tell you when that first occurred. I'd have to check Bellomo's book.

Like...1983 if you count the two gliders.
1985 if you count exclusives:
YOJOE.COM | S.M.S. [Cobra's Sentry and Missile System]
YOJOE.COM | C.A.T. [Crimson Attack Tank]
Or the Blue SNAKE Armor (though I'd consider that more a "running change."
But the first straight-up mass-retail repaints started with Tiger Force in 1988.

Dreadnoks in space? Cute little furry creatures magically turning into giant pissed off monsters with lazer guns?
Giant underwater robots full of water?
It jumped the shark from the start of the series if you really want to go that route.
I gave up on Joe as a kid when they introduced Serpentor.
Stupidest idea ever.

It was a Catch 22 problem for me. It was the toy industry which gave life to the creation but there desire to flood the market with new items and figures effected the story. I hated seeing character's phased out of existence in favor to introduce the next line. I also liked the beginning of the comic. The equipment and gear seemed ground in real life. A couple years later things tended to be more sci-fi.
I think the cartoon itself could be considered the shark jump. While it did bring GI Joe to the masses, it dumbed down GI Joe for a kid-centric audience.

Neon. That ruined GIJoe. Orange mohawk Zartan? WTF??? Shiny pink soldiers? WTF??? Eco Warriors was pretty shitty, but it all started with BF 2000. I can stand Sci-Fi for as someone said, he was the exception, not the norm. I pretty much agree with everything that was said above.

I am still trying to figure out wtf jump the shark is supposed to mean. At first I thought it was some reference to the new shark in ROC vs the old one in ARAH but now, I am not so sure.

The Fridge + any joe in sports attire= nail 1
Python Patrol & Tiger Force were actually kinda cool. The concept was neat; Python Patrol used MARS technologies to develop stealth / near invisibility for their units... Tiger Force was initially a special mission rescue team led by Flint & Duke. Interesting.
The Marauders had the BEST paint schemes, and much neaded updates of classic figs. They were great. They pinnacled right there.
Than came the DEA, Sonic Fighters, Street Fighters, Ninja Force, Battle Corps, and Eco Warriors.
All toylines should stay independent of current event / political tie-ins. The entire pro-earth rage that started in the '90's= nail 2.
DEA joes casting militant special ops / counter terrorist teams as drug enforcers= nail 3.
Star Brigade= nail 4.
Joe Extreme= nail 5
Sgt. Savage actually netted some pretty cool vehicles, and started the return to the Joe franchise as a special op's militant group. From there, slow revival.
That coffin was close to being burried, but suddenly revived as Hasbro realised it needs to hold the course, remember the mission statement.
GI JOE is synonomous with military, special ops, high tech weapons, and camo / real-world paint schemes.
Sometimes when they forget GI means general issue, things go astray.
When they remember, and bring it back, things get golden.
