1987 - the year of Battleforce 2000 and Cobra La, as well as the end of the Sunbow series. It quickly snowballed from there.

as a kid i liked the movie, even though it didnt go along with the comic.i recently downloaded it andits ok but a little far fetched.but yeah i remember the dic episodes showing the joes throwing away trash into the trashcan (in slow mo) before a battle. i thought this was weak. the neon crap unintentionally pushed me away although i did like the nintendo game. i still play both of them on my nes emmulator .never like battleforce 2000.who cares about space. cobra is to take over the world not space

Wow, there are alot of good entries here and I would agree with most of them.
Personally I would say that the creation of Serpentor was when it really became just too much! That was them launching point into cuckoo land with Cobra-la, BF 2000, etc. 1986 also introduced us to Sgt. Slaughter. I loved wrestling when I was a kid and the Sarge was awesome.....in that medium. However I always felt like he was forced upon my joeverse and I never really accepted it. 1986 was also the year they started heavily replacing characters (Flash w/ Sci-fi, Torpedo w/ Wet-suit, Gung-ho w/ Leatherneck, Breaker w/ Dial-tone, Snow-Job w/ Iceberg, Doc w/ Lifeline, etc.) I say that in my opinion, it was 1986 |

The most recent "jump the shark" is all the horrible repaints of great classic RAH molds we got after 2002. With the exception of like four or five figures they look like someones bad customs. All those HORRIBLE viper repaints are just insulting. GI Joe is becoming the Stones after 'Dirty Work'. Quickly outliving it's welcome.

The vehicles in '86 started to get a bit weird (HAVOC, STUN, etc) but were at least mostly done up in decent colours. But most of the characters you mentioned were pretty awesome, and a lot of the vehicles were too. Plus '86 was a pretty good year for the cartoon and comic. I think what happened is that the Hasbro team went overboard with certain aspects of '86 later on, but the line was still pretty strong then. |

GI JOE jumped the shark when they had "themes". for instance, i believe it was 1987 when all thier vehicles had some type of "transformer" aspect it it. the coastal defender, the maggot, mobile comman center, sea ray and the battleforce 2000 line. it pretty much screamed "transformers", changing from one thing to another.
then I rememeber in 1989, just about everything had a "seatbelt" because seatbelts were big in the media and there was a huge campaign to have everyone "buckle up" so hasbro may have tried to get the kids with these toys to learn at an early age by doing this. |
