Ha! My first Joe was exactly that set! Clutch and the VAMP. I also received Grunt at the same time. My parent's didn't have much money, so I didn't see a new Joe until I got Clutch again, but this time driving the desert colored VAMP.

My first joe was Gung-Ho. My father and I were in a old department store named Harts looking at Star Wars figures when we found the G.I. Joe figures. After looking thru them we found Gung-Ho, and since my father was a former veteran of the Marine Corps. having served in Korea during the war there, Gung-Ho was the natural choice. That was the start of my love of G.I.Joe. 25 years later I bought my oldest son his first G.I. Joe figure. Big surorise it was Gung-Ho. I just know that some how my father was smiling down watching his grandson fall in love with G.I.Joe. By the way, I still have my first Gung-Ho and even though he is a bit beat up and paint faded, he still looks great sitting on my dads roll top desk.

My older brothers first Joe was Gung-Ho. Upon seeing how cool he was, and seeing the cartoons, we somehow (probably my brothers doing) convinced my parents to take us to Jamesway (remember that dive, reminds me of walmart nowadays-got cashiers?) where my brother got Duke (his second Joe) and I got Cobra Commander.
To this day the hisping gravely barks of Cobra Commander are still my favorite.

Walked into an old school Wal-mart on a Sat. evening in the late summer of 82 & there was GI Joe everywhere! I had seen the commercials & the Vamp came with GI JOE! (I guess they meant GI Joe figure...I thought it was THE GI Joe...I mean Clutch looked a lot like the beareded 12 inch AT guy! & I was just a kid!) I grabbed up the vamp & that was my first ever Joe toy. The next week, I had worked my way into getting some new recruits: Scarlett,Rock-n-roll,Zap, & Flash! The addiction was on then!

My first exposure to Joes was the original 12" figures that my brother had...we used to dig holes in the ground, cover them with sticks and pine straw and make "traps". I remember being in a Roses store begging for a moving eyes joe, but my Mom wouldn't have it.
Then, when I was in the fifth grade, in '82 we used to get a little monthly magazine for the students, some little five page or so pamphlet with some articles relating to kids our age..you know, something that would attract your attention, but get you to read. Anyway, it had an article about the "Return of G.I.Joe" in a much smaller scale. It had a picture of Breaker, Snake Eyes, Flash and possibly the RAM. It explained that it no longer was a person, but a team. Which at the time made me upset. But, it was months later when I actually saw them in the store for the first time. I was in Best Products looking for the newest Star Wars figures, I'm sure, when I saw them. I got really excited and was able to convince my Grandmother to get me Flash and the Jump jet pack. I think I got Breaker after that, because he reminded me the most of the old 12" G.I. Joe. Good times! |

My first, like a few other on here, was the VAMP with Clutch. It was for my birthday, not sure how old I was, and I guess that Clutch fell out and was lost in the wrapping paper and thrown away. I never knew that the VAMP came with Clutch until years later.
