Wow, somebody else remembers "Best." Awesome. I just did some looking up and finally learned that many of their stores had facades built as architectural projects as much as "functional stores." You don't find Target doing that. Here's the url for the neat facades. The Towson, MD store was where I know I got many Joes, Transformers, and other toys. It may very well have been where I first saw Joes. http://www.siteenvirodesign.com/proj.best.php

I was 9 yrs old when the '86 movie animated came out and it immediately captured my interest! My Mother got me my first GI Joe Thrasher and his vehicle, which I don't recall at the moment. Unfortunately, my folks were only able to afford so many so I was not able to have a considerable amount to be called a collection.
I'm just glad we got the 25th treatment as I would love to have what I did to have back then. I'm so looking forward to the bigger vehicles and play set such as the Flagg, Defiant, Terror Drome etc. Last edited by Agent-GHQ; 05-11-2008 at 12:38 PM.. |

I saw Duke for the first time leading his troops into battle on the very first mini series in 1983 and i was hooked. I wanted to be like him lol. !The classic cartoon will forever be etched in mind. I didn't start collecting till 1985 when i found Flint (my first figure) My all time favorite too. I 'am proud to say that is how all this began !

I was a big joe fan when i was a kid. Loved the toys, and watched the cartoon religiously. I was a bit young though and put my joes through many battles, unfortionatly few made it out alive. I got pretty heavy into star wars, and ninja turtles later on and only picked up a joe occasionaly. (not a big fan of the late 90's early 2000 stuff) Then the 25th came out. I saw the original packages and it was like seeing them at TRU when i was kid all over again. It makes me feel all warm inside again. I love it

1982, straight arm Rock N Roll. He was my first. I remember begging my neighbor who was my adopted grandma to take me to Zayers, a dept. store in Pittsburgh. There I found my first Joe. I had a bunch of Star Wars figures and vehicles but I knew GIJOE was it. The commercials rocked. When I got to Zayers I ran for the toy isle. I found many joes there unlike today where you find very few. I picked Rock n Roll. I also got the red character from Tron. From then on GIJOE ruled my world. What kid doesn't want to be a real American Hero? I gave up Star Wars and for 25 years I have been collecting GIJOE.

Walked into an old school Wal-mart on a Sat. evening in the late summer of 82 & there was GI Joe everywhere! I had seen the commercials & the Vamp came with GI JOE! (I guess they meant GI Joe figure...I thought it was THE GI Joe...I mean Clutch looked a lot like the beareded 12 inch AT guy! & I was just a kid!) I grabbed up the vamp & that was my first ever Joe toy. The next week, I had worked my way into getting some new recruits: Scarlett,Rock-n-roll,Zap, & Flash! The addiction was on then!

http://www.siteenvirodesign.com/proj.best.php I bought many a joe there. My first was Hawk with the MMS (probably from Best). I can also vividly remember sitting in my Dad's car in a mall parking lot shortly after that with Snake Eyes and Scarlett. I was hooked by the little pamphlet that came in the vehicle box and the images in catalogs. After that it was the cartoon and the comic (my preference was for the comic). I only collected for a few years - until '85 - before I became less interested in toys.

Well I was 6 in 82 and my first figure was Grunt and I got him at TG&Y in Waveland , MS. I always had a fascination with the military since my Dad was a Drill Sgt. in the Army.
My two older brothers were big into Star Wars and I just had a few and they hated me playing with there stuff so my mom thought I should have my own line to collect and be my own. I next got Stalker, Snake-Eyes, and Rock & Roll. I was already hooked but when I turned on the TV one day after school and saw the cartoon mini-series and later the regular series I was hooked. I had the lunch box, sleeping bag, tooth brush, the cereal, the bed tent (anyone remember that...it was a tent that fitted over a twin size bed?) When Christmas came my parents got me the rest of the 82 line and pretty much most of the stuff till after the Christmas of 6th grade. That was the last time they bought me any Joe's cause when summer vacation hit they made me put it all away!! Said I was too old for toys. I would sneak them out and play and still buy stuff and sneak it in my room, LOL. As a kid my parents only let me collect one line....I only had five G1 Transformers, about 3 Go-Bots, Raphael form TNMT, Lion-O from Thundercats, only 4 MASK toys, a bunch of LEGO, and my Dad and I were into pro-wrestling so he would get me those big WWF LJN wrestlers and the ring....have about 25 of those guys, some of my own Star Wars but I inherited my brothers as they got out of toys and into girls. But GI Joe was it....I got most of the run from 82-90 with the exception of the FLAGG, Defiant and the Terrordrome. I have gone back and got a lot of stuff I am missing and hope to complete the original US run, but the 25th is occupying my time these days. I still kick myself over the Terrordrome, one birthday I had the choice of the Terrordrome or a new bike, I remember my mom gave me the choice and said I was getting older and I chose the bike...stupid bike! LOL. Anyway as the mention of Best store was made (none of those down South) what are some the stores did you get your Joe's from? For me it was: Then..... TG&Y K-Mart Children's Palace Circus toys...in the Slidell Mall KB Toys....in the mall Eckerds Drugs...where I was able to score my SE v2 Service Merchandise SEARS Mervyns Then and Now... Wal-Mart Toys R Us Big Lots CVS KB Toys |
