I was totally out of GI Joe for years after the late 80s, and when I bumped into stuff like the Sgt Savage and GI Joe Extreme, I just rolled my eyes. especially recently over the DIC toons posted on Youtube I missed the first time around. I wasnt aware of the two movies that came out on DVD, but what I have seen as I have caught up really looks crappy.
I'll be honest, I grew up overseas during the original GI Joe cartoon run, but did read the comic, which I really did like. Well, up to about the Cobra Civil War and then I lost interest. But when I moved back to the states, I was actually embarrassed by the GI Joe cartoon and the "Yo Joe" and everyone flying a Skystriker and all the laser guns bla bla bla. I could see it was for younger kids and I just hated it. The first GI Joe cartoon I really watched and enjoyed was Sigma 6, which I thought was great. I always prefered GI Joe to be a small covert outfit than a small army. I know it had some problems, but I didnt think it deserved the backlash it seemed to get from most fans. I mean, what are they comparing it to? I can't imagine other GI Joe cartoons... I loved what they did with the characters of Firefly and especially Storm Shadow in Sigma 6, and Cobra Commander was a freakin badass. And then Rise of Cobra came out and I am not sure which I dislike more, Rise of Cobra or Transformers 2. I mean, if I HAD to watch one of them again, I might just choose suicide. Of course Resolute was very cool, and no doubt holds the standard to which we all hope GI Joe shows would be, but it was an hour long and a one-shot story. And I hated Storm Shadow in it. So this bring us up to Renegades, which at first I was uneasy on the A-Team concept, but as each episode has gone by, I am actually stunned by what Hasbro has had the balls to air: murder and violence. Murder as in the hard master being poisoned, and Snake Eye's thoat getting slashed. I am not sure what happened to Airborne (I feel like he'll make a comeback at some point as a captured prisoner), but for now its pretty impressive to lead on that gone all this time. Pretty heavy stuff for what is really a kid show. And I love what they have done with the characters of Tunnel Rat and Lady Jay, and even Flint. Just not what I was expecting and I am impressed. It is more mature than I thought it would be. I was also annoyed with the early character designs and art, but now love it. All the washed background scenes during in Snake Eye's dojo episodes was really brilliant. Its definately GI Joe inventing itself and a story I probbaly wouldnt have recommended first before others... but I have to admit that I do not want to miss an episode. And that is not something I ever would have said about Sunrise GI Joe, DIC, Extreme, etc. So I am stunned sometimes to hear some peeps don't like it. It might be one of the best we've ever gotten. I mean, if you think Renegades blows, what series is actually better? |

Whether it's good or bad, I think all the Joe media has it's place in time and did what it could. Therefor, I like it all
but so far Renegades is great. |
