After reading the 20 Worst Vehicles thread I thought this might be a good thread.
There seems to be "different kinds" of Joe fans. You have Type A: Original 13, completely enveloped in the military themes and almost "by the book" Joe fans. Then you have Type B: Which is everyone else (to save me alot of typing) Going back to the Worst Vehicles thread--yeah it's funny (though that one was weak) but I never understood the dislike for things that borderd on "unrealistic" or "unreasonable". If G.I.Joe didn't have some..actually alot...of out of the ordinary vehicles, figures and characters--why not just get a bag of plastic army men? Because thats what it comes down to. I understand it was more straight forward and "military" in the begining...but don't forget, you had crazy crap like Flash pushing a missle out of the way in space--inside of the 1st 10 issues of the comic. That's just 1 instance. So I ask the Type A guys. Would you be more inclined to like things like Ninja Force if they were in all black and not brightly colored? Would the BUGG make more sense if it wasn't for the neon color scheme and types of figures/characters that surrounded it? I'm am NOT comming down on anyone who doesn't appreciate things that are important to my own "personal Joeverse"--I'm just trying to understand why it is so many of us get segregated under the same franchise umbrella. Or...is it just as simple as G.I.Joe having something to offer "fanboys" of all kinds. |

I'm definitely a Type A, but I also like some of the more "believable" out there stuff. Also some of the more exotic characters. While I had 12" Joes as a little kid before ARAH came along, what I loved about ARAH was that it was kind of like the American version of James Bond. Cool soldiers, with larger then life bad guys, with whacky schemes, and super weapons. To me, and I stress TO ME, it's that delicate balance that ARAH had in the first couple of years that was my favorite. The BATs were really the last figure I was really into. However, the majority of my favorites all appeared from 82 to 84.
That being said. I know there are guys who love the crazy over the top out there stuff of the later 80's and 90's. That's what's cool about Joe. You can use them as plain old Army men, but with a million times better playability. Or crazy space travelling, mutated creature fighting heroes. Or anything in between.

cobra la is a bible. few believe it, but they become fanatical. some have even been to cobra la itself. the fanatical believe that man is the evil the destoyer and the reptile are the true holders of knowledge. that cobra will bring peace once all is said and done but there is much work to do and far to many unbelievers. hail cobra! ha lol.

eh.. I never really gave it much thought.
Im Both actually. meaning., I Like the realistic stuff, but the Mega Marines are commanded by Captain America, and the D.E.F. is commanderd by the Punisher, and Iron Fist is part of the Ninja FOrce. My air forces has a Buck Rogers Starfighter and a Robotech Veritech in it, and I have an "armored" division consisting of An avatar mech, Robotech hovertank, Delta 6 Suits, and Iron Man Armors.

I flip-flop the "type".
If the figure motif is like say CLUTCH, and he's driving a regular VAMP, then old school CLUTCH design works for me. Now, lets say they release a CLUTCH with a different type of vehicle, that he'd have some aptitude to drive, like a S.W.A.T van or something, and the figure design has a costume similar to SHOCKWAVE/BLAST, then that works for me too. But ninja guys dress in all neon? The motif doesn't make sense. If the character motif matches a theme, much like POC now, I am cool with it. But figures outside what a "theme" would imply seems stupid to me. So for me, it depends on the factors of WHY they look like they look and the idea behind it. Not just making them some kinda odd color with no thought to back it up. Night Force was cool, bc of the idea behind color scheme. Same with Tiger Force etc. Ninja Force, that was dumb coloring. Star Brigade, again, dumb coloring. Sound FX/FORCE figures, dumb colors, but that Stalker was pretty decent. I can even live with Slaughter's Marauder's and their blue, bc that was like their unit color designation. |

I'm a sorts take it as is kinda guy so I guess I fit in the B group.
I've always chalked a lot of the quirks in G.I. Joe (be it cartoon, comics, or toyline) up to this is a special branch of the military, but bottom line this is a FICTIONAL property and I have to remember fiction rules apply. And that's likely what drew me to Joe over other properties like Sgt. Rock, or The Corps is the amount of fiction attached to this property cause lets face it one of the best parts about Joe that sets it appart is characters and story. Larry Hama, Ron Friedman and a quite a few others took a toyline that could have been a very forgetable cast (imagine 11 guys in green, 1 in black, and a girl with no backstory) and made them memorable fictional characters. It would have been just another action figure line, or just another military line. That having been said no matter what level of realism is peppered in any and all fictional rules apply... -Ninja trances -Cryogenics -Pogo's -Animal DNA soldiers -Space battles -Alt timelines -Time travel -Weather dominators -Shrink rays -Battle Andriod Troopers -Crazed dentists -Holographic assasin with biker gangs that eat doughnuts and drink grape soda. Its just the nature of the game, yeah sometimes it goes too far I'll admit that. While I like some of the realistic elements of Joe, I also like some of the fictional elements as well. What makes me laugh is I don't hear anyone complaining about the realism of other fictional properties like Transformers, or Star Wars or Star Trek. I think what really separates us is when they make a movie or comic. The more real world types like me don't like the fantasy aspect too much. I think that's why Star Wars was so successful. You knew it wasn't real but, it was so well done that it was believable, if that makes sense. |
