I thought I remembered seeing a post on this some time ago, but I can't find it; How many soldiers does Cobra have? Alotted to Air, Naval and Ground Corps, dispersed among the various Troopers, Officers, Crimson Guardsmen, Vipers, Tele-Vipers, Motor-Vipers, Techno-Vipers, Eels, Snow Serpents, Desert Scorpions, Incinerators, Decimators, Range-Vipers, Rock-Vipers, Sea Slugs, Ice-Vipers, Secto-Vipers, Alley-Vipers, Star-Vipers, Strato-Vipers, W.O.R.M.S., etc. etc. - has anybody broken down how many individuals fill the slots for these forces? Just wondering. I'm in the process of doing something similar, after breaking down all the individual forces into separate categories, figuring out what froce would make another obsolete, what type of training they would have, etc.

I'll take that as a no. Damn. I'm still working out this myself, and as soon as I do, I'll post my findings. I've got a basic rank structure worked out, with enlisted, officer, naval officers and warrant officers. I'm corresponding these ranks to the specific Operational Specialties that I'm laying out. Slow work, done in the time I have available to do it.

Okay - I got overwhelmed by running the numbers. I started out by inventorying all of the figures that have been associated with Cobra since the ARAH inception in 1982. And there's a lot. Then, I went through the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines occupational specialties, compiling all of them into one list under several sub-categories. Not quite finished with that, but so far I'm up to 14 pages (Times New Roman font, size 8). This includes everything from Infantry, Artillery, Pilots, Police, Trainers and Black Ops to Fuelers, Clerks, Mechanics, Lawyers, Cooks, Archaeologists and Graves Registration. Everything a fully functional military would need. I'm still working out the Naval branches, and then I will need to fill in all of that with the Cobra Viper branches and what not. All in all, Cobra would have somewhere, at a conservative estimate, of around 75,000 in their employ.
Here's the sub-branches: COMMAND AND STAFF BRANCHES Personnel and Administration Legal Services Financial Services Public Affairs Ceremonial Band OPERATIONAL BRANCHES Intelligence Air, Sea and Ground Task Force Advisory Board Meteorlogic and Oceanographic Board Signals Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Data Systems Weapons Research and Development Antiquities Component Specific Readiness Training Security/Military Police and Corrections Range Operations Recruitment and Retention LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY BRANCHES Supply Operations Quartermaster Ammunition and Explosives Fuel Avionics Fuel and Airfield Services Food Services TRANSPORTATION BRANCHES Motor Transport Special Motor Vehicle Operations MAINTENANCE BRANCHES Ground Ordnance Maintenance Naval Ordnance Maintenance Aviation Ordnance Maintenance Construction Engineer - Ground Work Construction Engineer - Building and Design Avionics Systems Maintenance Electrical Systems Maintenance SUPPORT BRANCHES Communications Traffic Management Medical Emergency Response Nuclear, Biological and Chemical ARTILLERY BRANCHES Field Artillery Air Defense Artillery GROUND FORCES BRANCHES Infantry Combat Engineer Armor NAVAL FORCES BRANCHES Naval Combat Operations Amphibious Armor Naval Flight Operations AIR FORCES AND AEROSPACE BRANCHES Flight Officer Corps Air Support ELITE FORCES BRANCHES Elite Forces Branch Support Black Ops BRANCH IMMATERIAL There's a lot left out, but that's what it's shaping up to be. Let me know what you think, and by all means, criticize this. Keep in mind, there isn't any Cobra specific branches within here yet. I'm slowly working on molding this into what the Cobra organization would look like on paper. |

I'm going to assume this is fairly late in the timeframe, when Cobra has it's own island and everything.
Early in the timeframe, I don't think it would be nearly this complex. Heck, there's a lot of military theorists out there who figure modern armies have way too many ranks. Nelson's navy had what, 8? (Landsman, Ordinary Seaman, Able Seaman, [Petty Officer - an appointment, not a rank], Warrant Officer (Gunner, Surgeon, Carpenter, etc), Midshipman, Lieutenant, Commander, Captain, [Commodore - again, an appointment, not a rank], Admiral.) Okay, that's 9, 11 if you count the positions that are appointments but not real increases in rank. My rank structure is: Trooper, Officer (functionally, a corporal or serjeant) , Captain, Colonel, General (Baroness, etc) Commander. But my "Setting" is very early, when it's an underground group with a lot of neat toys but no real soldiers. They don't know, or care, about the difference between a Sergeant and a Platoon Sergeant. However, having said all that: if you look at a timeframe near the "end" of the story, Cobra has certainly grown big enough to warrant a certain depth of rank and specialty; and has probably recruited the military types who'd know how to do it. Though 75,000 men under arms means Cobra's military is bigger than Canada's...

I have them about 100,000 or more. I have Cobra having posts and/or bases in all real and G.I.Joe. world nations. And C.G.'s in more places too!
