Hey fellow tankers, I just wanted to share a quick cool little thing that happened to me this weekend.
First to give you a little back-story... I've been a Joe Collector since about 1987 when I pick up my first Joe, "Sneak-Peak", at White Mart I believe was the first thing I bought with my own money! My Older Brother and Sister who were also into G.I.Joe as kids, eventually handed down their toys to me, and by the age of about 10 or 11 had a formidable G.I.Joe collection with at least 300+ figures and a good number of the vehicles and play sets (Including a complete U.S.S.Flagg which I bought at a garage sale for $20!). In my early teen-years (post 1994) I still clung onto G.I.Joe and started finding comic-book stores and used toys shops where you could still find the figures. I became quite fond of a store called "Toy-Riffic" which had a couple of part-time employees who would "complete" the loose G.I.Joe figures for resale. I always enjoyed knowign I was able to purchase complete figures in good condition, knowing a fellow collector had lovingly made sure all the pieces were there.
Flash Forward to January 2005 My collection of toys (including Star Wars and many other Comic Figures) is now at around 2000 Pieces. Those along with a rather large comic book library go up in flames at the hand of an arsonist. My childhood home was destroyed along with everything I owned. I was left with the clothes on my back, a King James Bible and a Spider-man PEZ dispenser that somehow was washed out of my bedroom window and flowed down my drive-way unharmed.
It took almost 3 years for me to even think about collecting again as a number of life changes took place (got married, was blessed with a beautiful daughter, etc) - Then on Christmas morning I opened my gifts from my Sister in-law and there it was.. the last thing I expected... the 25th Anniversary 5-Pack of Joes, Plus a Hooded Cobra Commander! That was awesome! my 24 year old self, was much more of a 4yr old self without regard I opened them then and there and started playing with them- My wife is so proud. I've since stayed on top getting each figure and vehicle to date as they've been released. Its been a great ride so far!
Well... Flash forward a few months to last week, I'm at my Church talking to a friend and I find out that there is another Joe fan who attends there, so I strike up a conversation with the man, Andy, and find out he has around 1400 figures a talked for at least a half an hour about what we thought of the upcoming movie, the "modern era" figures etc. He even has a few costumes he has made for conventions and Halloween. It was really great to make that connection, but bitter-sweet as that was our last official Sunday there as my wife and I are moving 40 miles away next weekend.
But- This Sunday afternoon as I'm packing my belongings for the move, we get a knock on our door and its Andy, the G.I.Joe collector! And he's got a Shoe-box full of bagged mostley complete 82-94 RAH Joes! FOR ME! When he heard about the fire he remembered he had a bunch of figures he was going to put them on e-bay, and this was box 1 of 2 (I have to come over for dinner and see his collection for the rest) I was on the floor! it was awesome!
Those were the first ARAH figures I've gotten since the fire, and a great start to rebuilding my army!
And... I also found out another piece of knowledge... We talked about "Toy-Riffic" (the store where I used to buy used completed figures) and found out he not only worked there... but was one of the "Joe" guy's who would complete and baggy all the figures!
Its a small world, and its great to also have this connection on the 'Tank with other like minded fans who can appreciate things like a debate over Dr. Mindbender's "Purple-Pants" or Lab Coat.
Thank you for your time! Yo Joe!

It makes you feel good when people do things for no other reason than just to be nice to someone.
