First, let me apologize if this has been previously beaten to death. I've not seen the topic discussed before and it has always bugged me...
If Tunnel Rat is supposed to perform the duties of his namesake, then why the hell does Hasbro always package him with enormous weapons and giant backpacks? Remember the stuff the original ARAH figure came with? I know, I know - his old 1980's file card never specified that he crawled through tunnels. It actually said that he was an EOD guy and his secondary specialty was Combat Engineer. Would it be too much to package this guy with a compact assault carbine (M4 or smaller), a pistol and a flashlight? |

I think when I get around to repainting my RoC Tunnel Rat, he'll be assigned some new weapons.

I always figured the large backpack was a battery and frame system for the flashlights, so he could crawl and have the lights on and keep his hands free for whatever he needed.
I'm fine with the large guns. Just means he sits at the start of the tunnel and opens up and nothing is left at the other end.

In Vietnam, tunnel rats didn't spend all their time crawling underground, they were still infantrymen. When it comes time to go VC hunting, they'd drop the ruck and primary weapon and head down with a flashlight and a sidearm. So I have no prob with his gear, although he should have had a pistol included. My original o-ring tunnel rat had Outback's legs, for the camo pattern and removable flashlight.

I never had a problem with it. I doubt he'd be using all his gear if he's crawling through air-ducts and the like, but probably most of the tunnels he goes through are large enough for him to stand upright in, so not a problem.

I think it's a little wacky but not a deal-breaker.
After all, we're talking about a fictional universe featuring a vehicle that turns from tank to helicopter, a guy cloned out of DNA from people who have been dead for centuries, and featuring a military wherein enlisted personnel are trained and trusted to operate multi-million dollar fighter jets (in addition to their normal duties). |

Tunnel Rat had his shoulder holster with pistol and flashlight from his backpack if he needed to go into a tunnel or ventilation shafts. I figured he carried the big back for the rest of his EOD gear if the mission needed it and the big M60 and scope for regular infantry missions
