Ok everyone here is the deal. Yesterday I was in a local shop where I go from time to time to see if they have anything new in G.I. Joe. Well they had the the same old stuff I already have but they had gotten in 3 cases of ROC Valentine's Day cards for kids. Now the guy working (who is the owner and supposed to be a collector himself) proceeds to try and sell me a couple of boxes saying that they are going to be collectible etc. and I should get some for myself and my son's school class. So we were talking and I said that I really don't collect things like this for myself as I mostly only collect the figs, vehicles, comics, trading cards, and any other odds and ends that I feel are cool or fit with my collection and so forth but I was going to buy 1 for my son anyways. That is untill he tells me I'm not a true collector because I didn't want these for myself. Well that was it! Not only did he lose out on the sale yesterday even though it wasn't much but he lost out on any future sales for good. I'll never go back there!
So my question to all of you is does that make me not a true collector. I mean to each their own right? I already know the answer to this question but I have read to many blogs on Joe websites in the past with people bashing others with things like AFA collectors are stupid for paying the prices they do, or because someone didn't like the ROC movie or the new toy line that they are not as committed as other collectors, MOC/MISB vs. MLC Collectors etc.. I'm just so tired of hearing collectors bash each other because of their opinions. Opinions are like assholes everyone has one. Because we don't agree or don't like an opinion dosen't make anyone better than the other. I KNOW I'M A TRUE COLLECTOR BECAUSE I LOVE DOING IT!!! RANT OVER!!!!

Amen and hallelujah, brother!!!! You have been set free!!!!
When I was younger I used to be like the guy you were describing. I collected Star Wars and I had to have one of everything, even if it was something I didn't really like. Looking book I guess the reason was to have a sense of pride about something in my life, because there wasn't really anything else then for me to feel good about. At some point I realized that having a Star Wars collection that could rival Steve Sansweet's and the bragging rights that go with it wasn't really what I wanted out of life. I mean I would only have the respect of Star Wars fans and collectors, with everyone else I was marginalizing myself. I also realized it was REALLY stupid to spend money on stuff that I didn't even want to buy to begin with. I justified it though, by thinking that an incomplete collection wouldn't be worth as much, even though I already knew that when you sell an entire collection of anything you loose money. I got tired of being broke and havin' a bunch of stuff settin' around that I wasn't getting any enjoyment out of it. It was almost like if my favorite restaurant quite serving good food and I continued eating there just out of obligation or something. I couldn't see any sense in continuing so I got out of it for a bit. Now I only buy what I really like and I hardly ever keep anything carded or boxed. I get alot of enjoyment out of opening my figures and actually posing them and making dioramas and stuff like that. |

Sounds like the owner of that shop should try his hand out at a Ford dealership...

I guess it's as simple as you see a property that appeals to you enough for WHATEVER reason, that you'll purchase something from it...Hell, even if it's just one thing...Nobody owns the title of "Collector", I don't have to buy a ton of shit from whatever property I like, to be considered a fan of it.
Anyone with that kind of mentality is an Idiot...As long as I like just one concept, idea, or say design of something, I'm buying it...but I'm not gonna buy the Lunch Box and jammies too, sheesh.

If the collector actually has a collection and isn't just lying to impress the ladies at the waffle house... He's a true collector.

It's simple, a true collector is anyone that collects.
A collector should only get what they want, not what someone says "will be collectible". That store clerk is an ass, pure and simple. Pulling the "only a true collector" card is just as bad as the "only a true fan" card. Guy was just trying to make a sale.

A collector collects things for his own satisfaction, no one should ever tell you how to collect, its not even their business. I hate store owners that are pushy, its just a pet peeve of mine, some people can take it but for me Im thinking just let me get what I want, not what you want me to buy.
