Interesting tidbit about Shipwreck--at the time the figure was released, he was one of the highest-ranked enlisted men on the Joe team. Equivalent to Gung Ho and only outranked by Duke.
OK, so its not THAT interesting. |

Basically Sunbow was badly copying Star Wars when Luke and Obi-Wan met Han Solo in the Mos Eisley Cantina.

I got the new DVD set for Christmas and was watching and saw that. I had no memory of Shipwreck's origin as a child- must have missed it that day.
How DID a sailor end up in a Cobra town with a funny sandboat? WTF??? I like Freedom's take on him being reinvented as a Han- Solo type. I can live with that. Let's say he was out of the Navy and happened to know some buddies that were mercing. He found out JUST THAT DAY that they were actually in a weird Cobra cult and was about to leave town when he saw our boys in trouble... |

Anyone ever think the Shipwreck might have been on leave. You know sailors get time off to do what the want. Maybe he was on leave and over there to do a race with his sailboat.

Shipwreck was in the US Navy, even in the cartoon before he was a soldier of fortune.
If you watch the 2 part episode of Theres no place like Springfield you can see his origin before he meets the JOE Team. Real military groups often have contacts that are not on the official roster, and have un savory pasts.... Thats how they get alot of their intel. Its not too much different than police informants.... You have to see all the episodes to fill in the gaps... Tankers are the best JOE fans.

Make it even more suspcious that a soldier would be on leave in a Cobra town. Coincedance? Unlikely.. Quote:
Very true. It's like the writers of the cartoon said at the very beginning "we're not going to follow any real world military conventions at all"

Here is my crazy belief... Shipwreck as a figure is very boring. It's a guy in a sailor suit. Damn near one of the Village People. Giving him this persona gives him character (and fans). This helps to sell product. The same can be said for Bazooka. It seems that the more boring the design of the character, the more the ante was upped to make them a desirable figure. I chalk this up to marketing.

Yeah, I always thought Shipwreck was a little shady....but that's just the cartoon. Even when I was 9 years old watching them first-run I thought they were ridiculous. I could barely get through the Mass Device battle pack dvds, they were so bad. The comic was where it was at, for me. I always took the comic and the file cards to be the real defintion of the characters, not the cartoon.
