There have always been tales in which the heroes are battling villians in identical masks or costumes, and if you look at history itself, there have been numerous armies in near-identical uniforms: The ninjas of japan, the soldiers of ancient rome and greece, and so on. As for cobra being a ripoff of hydra... hydra is a ripoff of another fictional army of identically-clad villians which ripped off another one and so on and on.

They did leave off Doc Savage on the Superman bit (Man of Bronze vs Man of Steel... they are both named "Clark" even). Re: Cobra. The Champions RPG's Viper organization predates Cobra (and figure heavily in the recent computer game). They rip off Hydra so much they even use the same colors. One could argue the game is all about emulating comics, though. Batman doesn't kill because after the first adventure, the publisher wanted to be able to have the drama of recurring villains like... Dick Tracy! So a no killing decree was made. |

Hey lets not forget that Battlestar Galactica (TOS) which heavily took elements from Morom religion, was sued by Lucasfilm for having too many similarites to Star Wars...which is funny as hell considering you could say Star Wars has many similarites to the serials of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.

As for buck rogers, It has been around a long time... from the newspaper comic strips to the radio programs of the 40s to the saturday matinees of the 50s and 60s all the way up to the present day. In fact, the buck rogers tv show of the 80s had one episode in which the actor that had played buck in the older movie serials appeared in. And flash gordon has been around a lonnnng time... and both of those series were probably inspired by an even older, and long forgotten, spacefaring story.

Another trivia point: Lucas wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie but the rights were nabbed by Dino De Laurentiis. In turn, Lucas decided to try to make an original sci fi thing instead. So Star Wars fans can be thankful for that 1980 Sam Jones flick (Flash aaaahAAAAAH!) for their Star Wars. |

Everything is a rehash in some form or another. Hydra was a rip off of the 1940's era Fu Manchu and and the Hand before that.

You guys want to see shameless, Find a recent film entitled "Rangers". Has Corbin Bernsen in the credits even though he had a small role. For those here who grew up in the 1980's, it's almost insulting how much footage was recycled from other films. I caught small action sequences from "Navy SEALS" whioch wasnt so bad, but the last full 30 minutes was reused footage from "Invasion USA"
I'm not sure if one can really label Cobra as a rip off of Hydra though. The idea of the Joe team was something Hama came up with as purely as a comic book. (different names, etc. I saw sketches years ago) c. 1980. and virtually all the villianous groups in comics and toys from the 80's, they all seemed alike. |

Sam Jones's Flash Gordon is awesome!
While were on the subject of films borrowing. Scream which was praised as so fresh and original, borrowed a lot of its scenes from other horror films. Including Dementia 13, Night of the Living Dead, Halloween and others. The character Billy Loomis is a referance to Sam Loomis from Halloween who himself is a reference to Sam Loomis in Psycho. Halloween which was credited at the time as being the blueprint for slasher films owes a HUGE debt to Black Christmas (1974). |
