I have been to a few national conventions and met a handful of guys who "appear" to make a substantial living off of nothing but selling GI Joe on the secondary market. Not that I will ever have this aspiration but can anyone shed some light on how a person can make $100k+ a year just by buying and selling GI Joe figures (assuming this happens).

Yep.
Pay attention to the boards and get a feel for what will be the "hot" items upcoming and buy them all up. Also, I'm sure for the most part, that they're scalpers, selling the hot items for well above retail. Probably the people that were selling Best of the 80s sets for $50 and $60 bucks a piece, selling CS SE before they were common on the shelves for $30 bucks, etc..

It is very time consuming, but you can buy large lots on Ebay, Craigslist, etc. and break them up and sell individually. I used to do this to fund my toy habit, but an aggressive person could make quite a lot of money doing it full time.

If you have a network of people working for you...looking out at yard sales, flea markets and auctions, you would be surprised what you can find. Craig's List users who find toys in the attic and list them for pennies.
I really tried to sell as a second income a few years back. The key is to keeping an inventory that is constantly changing, getting new items in on a regular basis and never being afraid to holding on to an item for fear of losing a few cents. I could never keep finding big collections to break apart and sell. So I would have a week or two of really, really strong sells and then it would dry up. Now I do it to basically keep money in my PayPal account to do a little shopping for the things I really need and can't find at retail. On a side note, these sellers that are getting the pre-sale items before anyone else are prob. making money hand over fist. I don't like the term scalpers as they are only selling an item that someone is willing to pay for. Like most have said before, most if not all of the items that come out can be had with a little bit of patience. I do believe that people who buy up the hot items and keep a revolving inventory do the best. $100,000 a year? If you travels across the US, lived in cheap hotels and kept picking up new stuff at local stores while setting up at larger toys/collectibles shows...I could believe it. |

Networking can play a big part as well. Some people make a living off of just vintage Joes (or for the most part) and that has a lot to do with networking and getting people to refer others to you, when they are cleaning out attics and so fourth. I have a friend that mainly sells vintage Transformers and Joes. He acquires most of his inventory through referrals. He has scored some big ticket items for dirt cheap (I'm talking MISB Flaggs, Defiants, you name it). And of course he can mark these items up accordingly on ebay and make his profits.
