He was great before they made him an invincible killing machine. They should have killed him off around 1988 or so, and brought in some apprentices like Jinx earlier, for him to train. When a character becomes too "kewl" like Darth Maul, Boba Fett or Wolverine, it gets boring.

Also, Duke is lame.

That's a fair statement. I think the problem might be more with the wave assortment in general. Everyone knows that we, as collectors, purchase a fair amount of figures. Then you have those one or two core figures that are clogging up the shelves and the next wave doesn't get purchased because the figures "aren't selling". I wish Hasbro had reps like lego, who went in and physically checked inventory and talked to customers. One guy could reasonably run a large area moving inventory according to market demand. He wouldn't have to be GI Joe focused ether. Hasbro has a lot of properties.

I'll go one further. I don't like the core characters concept. GI Joe is better represented with variety. Give me new characters and new stories. There is something about seeing a cool character and wanting him to appear more than he does, that is more appealing than over saturation of said character. snake eyes worked because he only showed up for the mission. You can't base a story around a guy that doesn't talk. You can try, but there's no personality. He doesn't show well over a lengthy period of time. He has more value in small doses. Honestly, I think everyone has more value in small doses.
Somewhere beyond 1994 and the advent of internet chat boards, the interchange of nostalgic opinions have kind of pushed the more important roles of these toys aside as criticism has become the new standard. It seems we rarely enjoy things anymore without trying to tear it apart - and that observation extends FAR beyond the world of toy collecting. Snake Eyes is the perfect state of GI Joe between the original 12" line and ARAH and everything that's happened after. He's a man of mystery that has an extremely detailed and convoluted backstory. Even beyond the ARAH story line, he's continually presented as a professional, stoic, dependable and deadly soldier. But he was just one of hundreds - and even now, with the line barely treading water despite having such a huge fan base, there are still new characters being introduced. It's such a vast, rich world that it does seem senseless to continually fall back on certain characters - but those core personnel are kind of the public face of the line. They keep it relatable to the non die-hards. And as testimony, I do recall a moment a few years back in the toy aisle at a store hearing a young boy of roughly 6 years old excited as hell at seeing a Snake Eyes figure. It was awesome to witness that. While the future of GI Joe remains uncertain at present, I think we should all kind of take this time to reflect and reassess our own reasons for being a part of this community. I sometimes wonder if it's ever been our own fault for the decline the toyline has gone in the past decade. Not for continually buying up what's been available, but by being so impossible to please this whole time. Of course, I also realize that most of these toys have been geared towards kids, but it seems overall kids now aren't as interested in toys as we were when we were kids. And that devotion to my childhood memories still resonates loudly. When the 25th first came out, I've been all-in. And while it's been a frustrating period at times, it's also been every bit as magical as when I was a child in the 80's - if not more so, because now I could go out and get what I wanted without parental restrictions. As an adult with a large collection of GI Joe figures, I have taken notice of how my collecting habits have altered over time. I did used to have a desire to get EVERY figure at one time, but that proved pointless and futile and expensive. Now - I've been slowly trying to mold my collection into something more fluid. Characters are merely representations of those from their file cards, or are wholly born from my own imagination. I have multiples that at present serve no purpose (quite a bit are Snake Eyes), but may be re-purposed as another character in the future. If we get a Snake Eyes movie like what's been teased - I'll take it. At least the brand is still somewhat alive through other formats if not in the toy aisle. But I will say in the original ARAH comic run, some of my favorite (and most memorable) moments were when we actually got to read words written by Snake Eyes. We take it for granted that since he's unable to talk, he doesn't have thoughts or opinions and only serves as a sort of invincible secret weapon of the GI Jot team. But he's equally an intelligent and articulated character as well. He doesn't do it for glory. He doesn't shout out action movie cliches. He does his job and when that's done, he goes home to try and enjoy the peace and freedoms that he fights for. I can totally get on board with that.

I know this is a zombie thread, but I heard something new that I believe adds to the discussion. I was watching “The Toys That Made Us,” and the He-Man creators mentioned that the line declined because the later assortments failed to include core characters. Essentially, if a kid couldn’t find a He-Man or Man-At-Arms on the shelves they would lose interest.
I can sympathize with this. I was born in ‘82 so I didn’t get my first Joes until ‘85 or ‘86. By that point, I had missed the first few waves of Joe. My friends and I jealously covered “old” figures, but which we meant the cartoon-accurate ones. It is annoying to collectors to be stuck with multiple Dukes and Snake Eyes, but after hearing about the fate of He-Man I would beware the risks of under-producing the core characters. |

What's funny is if you go back and read issues 21 upwards for about 2 more years, Snake Eyes was a sympathetic, and somewhat realistic character (except for him being unable to speak but part of an elite military unit). He was just an incredible fighter and Special Forces soldier with vast experience and training.
Somewhere along the way he became too "stylized", leaping through the air whilst switching out magazines, throwing knives and grenades, cutting through enemy rifle barrels with his sword, etc. He became Deadpool without the jokes. |
