That entire segment exists SOLELY on selling core characters, or those with a strong media tie in. The most successful and longest running brands have been built on core characters. Hell, even the collector oriented Transformers Generations segment still gets Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee and Starscream figures at least once every other year, if not EVERY year. The trick has long been to balance variations of core characters with secondary characters and villains so that kids can get the major characters, but those major characters don't choke off the line as a whole (see Masters of the Universe 2002).

We have alot of those shampoo bottle figs, they never get played with and take up a great deal of space. Such garbage. I am not really sure where they came from.
I guess their attraction is that they are big and cheap. Some of the newer ones are actually a bit better though- ball joint shoulder/hips and swivel wrists in various amounts on various figures. |

Back in the 80's you would get a new wave of figures every year. Having a Snake Eyes every other wave meant kids could get one, yet they were not flooding the shelves.
In the 25th era, it seemed a new wave came every couple of months. A Snake Eyes every other wave meant a lot of Snake Eyes and sometimes new waves never got ordered by stores because the old ones were still sitting. Also, I still don't completely buy the core character need all the time. Kids during the 25th era had no idea who any of the core characters were. ANY characters could have been made.

I never saw any Snake Eyes really shelf warm. What did shelf warm and bog down stores? Buzzers Cobra Troopers Cobra Vipers And Destro caused a LOT of damage between Rise of Cobra and Pursuit of Cobra. Fans also seems to forget that GI Joe was an active retail entity for YEARS before 25th came along. During that time, characters like Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Duke, Destro and Cobra Commander were heavily advertised, leading to familiarity that 25th traded on to appeal to any kids to begin with.

And yes...we need more females on the team. and to get on topic. SE is way over used...ninjas as a whole are way overused in the comics. the SE/SS fued is sickening at this point. especially with Tommy always flip flopping

My brother loves Snake Eyes. We have a whole section on our Joe shelf devoted to him.
Yes, SE is overused. We need more new characters in my opinion

I'd settle for developing the tons of existing characters that are never used instead of adding even more.

I will always be a huge Snake Eyes fan. His first action figure is what drew me to GI Joe and back to comics and action figures in general. I do blame him (and even more so Batman) for the ungodly amount of money I have spent on comics and toys over the years.
I wish the original SE was back in the comics, preferably in a solo title, and used in the main title only when everything goes to crap and his unique skills are required. |

The last 20 years reflect a different situation. Hell, the best selling action figures of the past decade have been those big, cheap "shampoo bottle" Hero/Titan figures. Which was so popular in Hasbro's lines, EVERY SINGLE COMPANY has adopted the style and price point.
