I don't want to pretend that I'm speaking for anyone else. Please understand that this is only my opinion here:
I'm not sold on the theory that Duke/Cobra Commander/Destro/etc are the most popular characters. They are just the core characters. Hasbro's marketing strategy from the launch of the 25th line was to over produce the core characters and under produce the back ground characters. I think a lack of variety has hurt the modern line from day one. Both GI Joe and Cobra have a ton of different characters and sub groups. I think that Hasbro has pushed this core group of characters because Joe's history can be confusing to a new consumer. Honestly the crazy variety was what made GI Joe great in the first place. (Not crappy repaint after crappy repaint.) |

I cut my teeth on the original Adventure Team (yes, I am old). We had NO personas past Land Adventurer, Sea Adventurer, etc. And we had a very limited assortment, maybe 10, and the figures were US. I said in an earlier reply to the Snake Eyes revolt that kids just like him because under the mask, it could be them. Imagination still rules.
What everyone has said about the core characters selling is true, and every kid wants the main guys when they become of age to play with them. There will always be a Duke. He is GI Joe. I like the idea of getting a Duke for all seasons (variants for different environs) because we cant change their clothes (that would be too much like barbie). I do however like the idea of having Snow Job and Frost Bite there whenever the core guys go to an Artic environ. Dusty should be there for all desert assignments, Shipwreck and Wetsuit, and the Navy/Coast Guard whenever there are amphibious ops, etc. So perhaps go-to supporting cast members, yeah? THere is no need for Downtown, Colonel Courage, Ice Cream Soldier, that just gets ridiculous. But please do consider giving us remakes of our belived sub teams (Tiger Force, Python Patrol, Night Force) and give us updates of our dreadnoks and Iron Grenadiers (without cobra insignia). Can you dig a Pythonized Rhino, or a TF Dragonfly? Keep the line fresh, but enough with the actors' likenesses for a while. back to basics Hasbro. If you cant give us a Flagg, Terrordrome, or something on that scale, then give us a new Moray, or a Tomahawk. As for Ole Snakes, Learn to love him Tankers, because he is a staple, and a MOney figure

I know this is a zombie thread, but I heard something new that I believe adds to the discussion. I was watching “The Toys That Made Us,” and the He-Man creators mentioned that the line declined because the later assortments failed to include core characters. Essentially, if a kid couldn’t find a He-Man or Man-At-Arms on the shelves they would lose interest.
I can sympathize with this. I was born in ‘82 so I didn’t get my first Joes until ‘85 or ‘86. By that point, I had missed the first few waves of Joe. My friends and I jealously covered “old” figures, but which we meant the cartoon-accurate ones. It is annoying to collectors to be stuck with multiple Dukes and Snake Eyes, but after hearing about the fate of He-Man I would beware the risks of under-producing the core characters. |

While that is true for us as kids, it just doesn't really apply to the adult collector. We aren't losing our toys or missing out on getting everything like we did as kids.
In fact, once I had my "ultimate" version of the figure, I just didn't buy the other versions much.

Strange, IIRC, Mattel DID reship core characters from MOTU. It was b and c-listers like Faker that got discontinued early (he was brought back near the end). Filmation didn't help by not show casing newer He-Man and Skeletor versions, because they thought themselves better than what they were doing...making an ad for toys.

Plus, with enough heads (a bit of a luxury at first) you can have an army of either night force or troopers. Storm shadows are a bit trickier, but they can always be his arashikage brothers.

As a kid he was my favorite because he wasn't much in the cartoon. I also liked Shipwreck because the voice actor for the parrot in the french version I used to watch was so silly it was quite funny.
Nowadays I feel there may be too many figs of him but since we had so many characters between 25th to 50th I'm not sure SE caused Hasbro to pass on other big characters. I'm just unhappy we never had a modern and widely affordable non-hooded Jinx. ^_^; (of course I hope the SDCC exclusive won't involve SE or SS this year)

I'll go one further. I don't like the core characters concept. GI Joe is better represented with variety. Give me new characters and new stories. There is something about seeing a cool character and wanting him to appear more than he does, that is more appealing than over saturation of said character. snake eyes worked because he only showed up for the mission. You can't base a story around a guy that doesn't talk. You can try, but there's no personality. He doesn't show well over a lengthy period of time. He has more value in small doses. Honestly, I think everyone has more value in small doses.
