This is something I've been mulling over in my head for a little while now, never really got down to doing any research but I was wondering if any real life terrorist groups/personalities inspired Cobra to any significant degree?
Obviously I'm not talking about the contemporary kind of Islamic terrorist here, but stuff like the Symbionese Liberation Army, which used a multi-headed Cobra as their symbol, or Subcommandante Marcos, a leader of the Zapatistas in Mexico, who always wears a mask and whose true identity is unknown. I was also wondering about the "movement" behind Cobra, or its philosophy, aside from the cartoon's "world domination" thing I mean. It seemed to be hinted at from time to time in the comic, and I was wondering if it was similar to communism/socialism, extreme right-wing politics or anarchism perhaps? Oh and I know all about it stemming primarily from Fury Force and HYDRA in the Marvel Comics, that's old news. I'm talking about real world influences. Any ideas?

I figure Hama probably did do some research into organizations that were around at the time to get some "inspiratioin" for Cobra.

COBRA always seemed like SPECTRE from the James Bond films to me.
As far as real world inspiration, I suppose one could say Nazi Germany.

Maybe those folks down in Jonestown had some influence...
Cobra Soldiers were fanatically loyal to Chrome Dome. They would die in a second to further his goals... |

You have anything to back that up?
I seem to remember Cobra Commander talking about "big government" in one of the issues, and how it ruined people's lives, etc - I think it was in the issue that Fred shot him and took over his identity for a while. I'm not entirely sure, as it's been YEARS since I read that (and it hasn't been reprinted in the TPBs yet), and I wondered if there were any other hints in the comic as to what type of government Cobra actually had in mind once it "took over the world" - I mean, they could only buy so much loyalty with money, they had to win the "hearts and minds" of their troops and followers somehow, right?

There was supposed to be an episode of the Sunbow cartoon called "The most dangerous man in the world" about a Karl Marx like figure who was Cobra's philosophical leader. Chuck Dixon said he really wanted to do this episode to show that Cobra as an organization did have a deeper philosophy, but Cobra Commander himself was more interested in his own power. Of course the episode got scrapped when Hasbro told Sunbow they wanted a Cobra Emperor introduced at the beginning of season 2.
