Awesome story,Troynos! I'll bet you've been cooking this one up for a while. As we were discussing over in the filecards thread, so much wasted potential with those characters. Now, my memory's a little foggy right now-I just got home from work. Is Lt. Bailey Vanguard from the Plague? If so, kudos! Again, so much potential that was wasted.

Steal all the names you want, lol
Most of 'em have come from other Joe media (Action Force, Extreme, Sigma Six, International, etc..) I have an excel spreadsheet of all the new characters and if they came from anything existing, as well as the changes I've made to existing characters (Shipwreck a SWCC, Rampart and Red Dog into Marines, etc..). I'll update that next day or two and post it.

Gets better. That story is far from done. It's going to end up serving two purposes, the origin of the Stalls and their story (using elements from the filecards) and a look into the background/history of Cobra.

Here's Firefly
I had already thought of this story and then Loose had to go and bring up the conversation point in the Filecard thread, so I went and moved the story ahead on the writing schedule.

The Shot That Misses
He lined up the shot at various points along the street, choosing points that offered the best and clearest shot at the street. The long barreled sniper rifle was pulled back as far into the room as he could get it and still get a decent shot. Outside of movies and tv, if an assassins barrel poked outside the window, that was a soon to be out of work, dead, assassin. He didn’t linger too long on a spot, not wanting an observant member of the gathering crowd below to start feeling twitchy. Satisfied that he had multiple angles that would work, he got up leaving the rifle on its stand near the window. The glass was closed, being an older building the window, one large pane, swung out. He’d open it when the time got closer. His would be one of dozens of open windows at the time. The people of the capital city of Dagestan leaning out to get a look at their new ‘democratic’ president as he drove by, waving happily now that he’d won the rigged election weeks ago. Firefly loved politics. Beyond the simple reason that it gave him work. No, he liked the intricate nature of the give and take, the back talk, the false talk, the lies and half truths. Everything that went together to make politics the shark pool that it was. He loved being the one to throw chum into the water and letting the sharks get consumed by blood lust. The room was sparse. The occupants lay dead in the bedroom, their blood still congealing on the floor. Luckily it was fall in Dagestan, the corpses would keep for awhile longer before the smell would start to be an issue. Always had to plan for the weather, he thought. Early on in his career, he had pulled a job in Phoenix Arizona in the middle of summer. He had set up and waited, and had to abort because the smell of the dead bodies started attracting the wrong kind of attention. He didn’t make that mistake anymore. On the small kitchen table was his hardcase of gear, set into a frame that he could carry comfortably on his back, all his tools of the tray, with space for the rifle and stand to be broken down. He’d had the case designed personally, to his specifications; it had taken awhile and a lot of money but was worth it. With a couple of adjustments, it would look like a suitcase, but was strong and sturdy enough for cross-country hikes, evenly distributing the weight. He pulled out the small handheld computer and input the password. The built-in satellite link-up, which he would have to replace after this job, it had been used too many times, connected to the internet. He typed in the address he wanted and a couple of keystrokes later verified that ½ of the job’s fee had been deposited in one of his many Swiss bank accounts. Satisfied Firefly shut down the handheld and went into the kitchen to find something to eat. ************* Steady, he thought to himself as the procession drove into view. Two lead cars and the open top sedan that belonged to the new President of Dagestan. He rode in the back with his lovely wife of ten years, beside him. Guards walked alongside the slow moving car, well others walked near the crowd edges scanning the rooftops and windows. Firefly knew he was far enough back and at an angle that the guards on the street wouldn’t notice him. He had picked this very window for that reason. It had taken him days walking the route to find a suitable spot and then another couple of days to find the apartments residence and a day or two to figure out their habits before he made his move. It paid to be thorough, he thought, literally, as his services were often in demand and at top dollar. Taking a deep breath, putting his eye to the scope, he lined up his shot. Wait. Steady. Now. He pulled the trigger. The shot rang out loud in the narrow streets. ************** Screams rang out. Guards shouted orders. Chaos erupted. The lead guard, who had been on the right side of the car ran over to the President, who was covered in blood and gore. But it wasn’t his own. The president had a bloody cut across the back of his head, the assassin narrowly missing the president but striking his wife in the head. The caliber of the bullet didn’t leave much left. “Get the president out of here,” the guard ordered, his men having to pull the president off his dead wife. “Search everywhere, find the assassin.” **************** Firefly quickly broke down the rifle and stand, putting them carefully away in the case. Locking the case he hefted it over and onto his back, adjusting it for a perfect fit. Looking around to make sure there was nothing left that could identify him, glad he had picked up the habit back in the early days of always wearing gloves and a mask, he left the apartment, taking the mask off and buttoning his long trenchcoat, closing and locking the door behind him. The hallway was chaos. People outside their doors, asking for the latest news, what had happened, was the president dead? He smiled to himself. He knew that these people were too busy with themselves to notice him and his suspicious backpack leaving an apartment of their neighbors, when he quite obviously wasn’t the neighbor. One of them might remember him, when questioned later, but that wasn’t a concern. He hurried into the stairwell and quickly walked down to the first floor. Downstairs was as chaotic as upstairs. Through the windows, looking out onto the street, where he could see thru the residences all crowding the windows for a look, the guards were starting to get organized. The search would begin. This apartment building would be one of the first searched. He quickly went towards the back, where the storerooms and boilers were. He had spent a late night exploring this building, he knew every nook and cranny. At the rear door he opened it, like he lived and used the door all the time. Most times, trying to be inconspicuous was what got you noticed. And there was the motorcycle, just as he had left it. Surprisingly no one had tampered with it, the traps he had left not set off. With a few quick moves he undid the traps and climbed onto the bike. The bike had no key slot, specially modified. No way to start it deterred many a thief. He reached down under the seat and hooked a couple of wires to the frame, he then reached under the front fork and clicked a hidden switch. He stood up and kicked the bar, the bike roaring to life. Another modification, the engine of the bike wasn’t what was expected of this make and year. Looking around one last time, he put the bike in gear and headed off, away from the noise and confusion. ************** Fifteen minutes later, a couple miles away from the apartment building, Firefly pulled the bike to the side of the road. Reaching around he pulled the handheld computer from its compartment in the case and turned it on. Getting a good link he checked the bank account. The rest of the fee had been deposited, along with a fairly large bonus. A personal thank you from the Commander, Firefly knew. Few people in the world got the kind of respect from the Commander that Firefly did, but then few people in the world could do what Firefly did. He did a quick search of the newsites. It was all over. ASSASSIN MISSES PRESIDENT, HITS WIFE INSTEAD The most common headline. Firefly laughed. He pulled a flat box with a single button from his pocket. Raising the antenna, he depressed the button. Fifteen minutes and a couple miles away, an apartment building exploded. Looking behind him to make sure the street was clear, Firefly pulled the bike out into traffic and headed off to his next assignment, laughing at the nature of politics. Few people would understand. Most would think it was a botched assassination attempt. But the Society would know. And they would know who had ordered it done. The Commander’s message was passed. And the Society ended the day one member less.
