once again you are doing awesome troy, I too like the use of playing the twins against eachother, until this new story, I'm assuming since I haven't read Cobra, they've always been a single unit working in tandem

The Viper pt 3
“So son,” the blond guy started, there had been silence for so long, both the guy and the woman just standing there, that it startled Stratton. “Why do you want to defect?” “If you think calling me son, friend or anything else is going to rattle me,” Stratton said, in as calm a voice as he could. “Try again.” “Son,” the guy said smirking. “I know it’s rattling because if it wasn’t, you wouldn’t have said a word. And you violated Rule #1.” Stratton sighed. He had to remember that he had wanted this. He knew that he wouldn’t have been welcomed with open arms and been subject to a questioning. Keep the temper in check Felix, he thought, mentally counting to ten. “I’m not a nice guy,” he started. “Never have been, as you know from my file. I couldn’t hack it in the Marines, not because I lacked the skills but I lacked the discipline. I joined King Snake for the adventure and the money. I joined Cobra for the same reasons.” “Adventure and money,” the woman commented. “Yeah, not a nice guy.” “At first it was adventure and money. Went to some really out of the world places and the money was real good, twice what King Snake had paid and that was nothing to laugh at. So yeah, I was happy. Barely any rules, they let me cut loose. “ “No discipline?” the guy asked. “No, not like that. There were rules, but you wouldn’t get yelled at if overly aggressive. It was actually encouraged. Pushing some villager out of your way, that wouldn’t get you written up for disciplinary charges, but would get you a pat on the back from the commanding officer.” “A group of not nice guys. You fit right in.” “Yeah,” Stratton started and paused. He took a deep breath and sighed. “I’m not a nice guy, but I’m not a bad guy either. Does that make sense?” “There’s a line,” the woman said matter of factly. “And you weren’t willing to cross it.” “Right,” Stratton said glad they understood. “There were some real hard asses in Cobra, and a lot like me, just there for the money and the kicks.” “What happened,” the blond guy asked. ************ Stratton held up his hand, the patrol behind him stopped. They were coming in from the north into an unidentified village of natives somewhere in South America, Peru he thought it was, he wasn’t high enough up in the ranks to know those kind of things. That suited him fine, long as he got paid and got to shoot things, he was good even if some of the things they did made no sense. Their forces had raided the village at dawn, now 5 hours later he and his 6 man unit were returning from a sweep of the forest, making sure it was clear. He didn’t understand why they had attacked this village. It wasn’t on any strategic road or land, as far as he could tell. Nothing special about it. He had tried asking the commander of this operation, a Viper called Komodo, but had gotten the cold shoulder and an answer that amounted to nothing more than “mind your own business, don’t question your superiors and betters, do your job”. Thankfully the money was good enough to make up for those aggravations. The village had put up a token fight but these weren’t trained soldiers, not like the 2 Viper squads were. Stratton had found it interesting working with military men from all over the world. They had all gone thru a special training course that had been designed to allow men from different units to work together and not lose any of the things that made them excellent soldiers. After the village had been taken, with no loses to the Vipers, and with minimal survivors from the villages defenders, they had gone about securing the village. All women and children had been rounded up and locked inside the communal hut, at least that’s what Stratton had thought it was. These were a very backwards and undeveloped people. Few of them spoke even a little English. One of the other Vipers had commented that he figured the only spoke enough English so they could trade with other villages and any travelers that happened by. Komodo had put Stratton in charge of sweeping the surrounding jungle, to make sure there were no villagers or no surprises out there. Stratton was impressed by Komodo. The man was good. He knew the backgrounds of all the Vipers under his command, was a good tactician. Stratton had worked with some commanders in Cobra that weren’t all that smart or good. He was glad that he had been assigned to Komodo. How Komodo could tell who was who under the reflective helmets, Stratton had no idea. He’d been a Viper for about a year now and still had a hard time, especially since none of them even wore identification numbers. If he wanted to advance up the ranks, he’d need to figure out how to do that. But he wasn’t sure if he did want to advance. The pay was great, got to travel got to bust heads. None of the annoying rules he had had to suffer with as a Marine. You still had to follow orders, but there was more leeway in how you went about doing that, and if you happened to be overly aggressive it wasn’t frowned upon but encouraged. So far he liked the operation as well. The organization seemed to have some overriding goal in mind. From what he could tell nothing was done just because, there was a reason that every operation was conducted. Which was why this village had been so surprising. He couldn’t figure out the reason for attacking it. It hadn’t taken long to sweep the jungle, they had gone about 100 yards out in all directions and had found nothing. The only disturbance they had found in the jungle had been the path the Vipers had cut on their way in. So they had returned to the village. When they got there Komodo had gathered all the surviving men in the middle of the village. He directed Stratton and his men to get the women and children and gather them off to the side. The Vipers formed a ring around the town center, Komodo in the center looking at the group of men to the side, the women and children watching in horror, the younger children crying. Stratton was pretty sure he knew what was coming, some kind of demonstration to make sure all the villagers toed the line and didn’t cause any trouble. He was right. There was to be a demonstration, but not the kind he had wished for. *********** “He shot them?” the woman asked, showing some emotion for the first time. “Just shot all the women and children?” “Not just him, but some of the other Vipers joined in,” Stratton said sadly. “A couple of others were shocked and angered, like me, we started to protest but…” “But it wouldn’t have done any good and probably gotten you killed back at base,” the man finished for him shaking his head. “Rough group.” “This wasn’t what I had signed up for. Not women and children, unarmed and defenseless men. After that I started looking at all the operations in a new light. But I didn’t say anything. I noticed that some of those that had been at the village, those that had been more vocal of their disapproval. They disappeared.” “And so you started to think about escaping and leaving Cobra,” the man asked writing some notes in the folder. “Yeah, but the operation is pretty airtight. You get leave, but it’s limited in where you can go. No one complains because absolutely everything you could want is there. Gambling, women, fights, all of it.” “Where are these places?,” the woman asked. “I don’t know,” Stratton started and saw the looks the two gave him. “I’m serious. You’re always flown in by plane or helicopter. They’re all islands, couple different ones, there’s even an arctic one with skiing. But you never know the coordinates.” “You used to be Force Recon,” the woman said. “You didn’t pay attention to the fauna, the height of the sun, length of travel, anything?” “Sorry,” Stratton said shaking his head. “At the time I wasn’t thinking that I’d need to know the locations. Just went for the fun. These men run a tight ship. You’re given just enough leash but there’s always the ever present threat of death if you go to far out of line. Enough money and freedom that most people don’t care that they’re limited in where they can go.” “We’ll get back to that,” the man said looking Stratton full on. “But first we need to verify some things.” He slid a piece of paper across to Stratton. “This is a list of dates and locations. It’s all the operations that we ran in the time you were a Viper. These are specific operations though, ones where we ran into Vipers. What we want to verify is that you were not at any of those locations and were not involved in the deaths of any of our men.” “And we’ll know if you’re lying,” the woman said.

That Others May Live pt 2
Hit&Run belly crawled up the slight hill, careful not to disturb anything that would roll down the other side giving him away. The sun had been up for three hours, he wished it wasn’t so bright. At the crest he slowly lifted his head until he could see over. Below him was a fairly steep drop that ended at the edge of a road. The road curved, the curve being where he was at. The forest was dense and could not see down the road, either way, too far. The curve of the road looked like some explosions had gone off, some of the trees were knocked over or had pieces missing. A decent sized crater was down the south end of the road about thirty feet back from the curve. What looked like marks made by bullets lined the trees on both sides. A battle had taken place here. Pieces of what looked like burnt metal were down near the crater. It wasn’t a large pile, would have probably been a van or something of that size before it was torched, Hit & Run figured. The wreckage was still smoking, not much but enough that the faint smoke had been what had indicated to the rescue party that they were near the coordinates. It looked empty, no one around. But Hit & Run wasn’t too sure. Better safe then sorry. He watched the curve, looking both directions, for another couple of minutes. Nothing stirred. He crawled back down the little hill and made his way back the 100 feet or so to where the others waited. They were gathered under a couple of pine trees, not visible from the air and in a dense enough forest that if someone walked by twenty feet away they wouldn’t be noticed. He crouched down in the middle, Lifeline and Manly facing him, Muskrat and Airborne watching the surrounding forest, facing out but close enough to hear and whisper. “It’s a curve in the road. Battle happened, mostly shooting by the looks. Big hunk of torched vehicle. No sign of our boys or any bodies period.” “Captured,” Lifeline asked. “Hope so,” Hit & Run replied. “Need to get someone down there to do a better check. See if we can figure out which way these people took the team.” “And who they are,” Manly added. “That too.” *********** Hit & Run returned to the spot overlooking the curve. He was there for ten minutes or so before he saw movement to the south. Muskrat was slowly making his way down the road. He had gone a couple hundred feet down thru the woods and entered the road well away from the curve, and hopefully anyone that may have been hidden. The others had stayed behind at the pine trees. Hit & Run watched intently, waiting for something to show that Muskrat had been spotted. Nothing. Hit & Run was starting to think that there was no one here. Muskrat, moving from tree to tree, had finally arrived at the crater. He bent down and gave it a through look over before making his way to the wreckage. The smoke was gone. Muskrat looked around and grabbed a stick then started poking thru the wreckage. From where he was, Hit & Run couldn’t see what Muskrat was poking at, but something had grabbed his attention. Muskrat worked at it until he grabbed it and quickly dropped it on the ground, shaking his fingers. Must have still been pretty hot. Muskrat spent some more time looking over the wreckage before making his way towards the curve. He approached it caustiously, weapon ready. He stopped at a tree and examined it. He pulled his knife from it’s sheath at his ankle and dug at the tree, trying to pry something out. He got it out and examined it in his hands, then put it in a pocket and continued towards the curve of the road. It was half an hour later that Muskrat signaled Hit & Run that it was all clear. Lifting his head up more, Hit & Run did a quick survey and planned his way down. Couple minutes later he was standing next to Muskrat looking at some tracks that headed off to the north. “What do you make of this,” Muskrat asked reaching into his pocket and handing Hit & Run a shell casing. “Odd caliber huh?” Hit & Run studied the casing. It definitely wasn’t anything that the Joes usually used, but didn’t look like something from any of the rifles Cobra commonly used either. He’d seen something like it before but where… “What do you make of these tracks?” He asked crouching down. The tracks were about two to three feet apart, and about 6 inches wide. Not that deep indented. Wasn’t anything heavy that had made them. They were barely noticeable. From up on the hill Hit & Run had never seen them. “ATV maybe,” Muskrat said looking around. “Would have needed something to remove any bodies and prisoners. What surprises me is that there’s only the one set of tracks.” “That is odd,” Hit & Run said standing up. “And by the tracks, it’s not a big one. Think someone had come back and cleaned up?” “Most likely. No footprints and I made at least four spots people had been positioned. I figure they were here, left and some came back to clean up and remove the bodies. Notice the lack of blood?” “That’s true,” Hit & Run replied walking over to a bullet marked tree and running his fingers over a dark stain. “There’s blood, but not enough. Whoever cleaned did a very good job.” “A thermite grenade took out the wreck,” Muskrat said still looking towards the north, he indicated the smoldering wreckage with his arm. “Quick and hot.” “Surprised the trees didn’t catch.” “The ones near the wreck are wet. Someone was here and wet them down and kept them wet for awhile. And the wreck is still pretty hot.” “So they’re not that far ahead of us.” “Probably not,” Muskrat said. “I’d figure an hour, two, tops.” “Good,” Hit & Run said. “Let’s get the others and head out.”

Very interesting. I like how you're using Airborne as a ground pounder, not just Wild Bill's gunner. Can't wait for the next installment.

The Viper pt 4
Stratton sat in the room alone, a tray with an empty plate and cup before him. They had loosened the bindings on his wrists, he was still bound, but free enough to eat comfortably with. An unarmed guard had brought the food in, and the two interrogators had left, about thirty minutes ago, maybe forty minutes. It was hard to tell time in the windowless room. He figured it had been four hours total he’d been in there. He had been given the list by the blond guy. He’d read it, a dozen locations and dates, maybe a little more. None of them had rung a bell. A couple of them he knew for a fact he hadn’t been involved in because on those dates he had been half a world away. He had been thankful to have not been involved, he doubted his chances if he had. He had given the man the list, told them he hadn’t been involved. They had said thank you, got up and left, and then a couple minutes later the food had come. The guard had told him to raise his hands and redone the bindings. Stratton had looked at the door and saw two guards right outside, guns pointed into the cell. The meal hadn’t been anything fancy, on par with what they had given him since he had first surrendered. Better then bread and water and he’d seen what the Cobras gave their prisoners, if anything at all, and anything was better than that. And so he sat staring at the empty tray. He left the utensils, plastic and flimsy; he had broken one of the fork’s points, visible on the tray. Let them know I didn’t pocket one as a weapon, he thought, but they’re probably watching my every move thru that camera anyways. He sat like that for another couple minutes when the same guard came in and grabbed the tray. He noticed the guard didn’t adjust the bindings. The door closed and he was alone. ********** He remained alone for awhile longer. A couple of minutes later the door opened and the blond guy walked in, alone. He left the door open behind him. Stratton leaned over to get a better look out the door and didn’t see the shadows of anyone standing near the door. “Trust me friend,” the blond guy said not looking up. He set a file down on the table and opened it up. “You wouldn’t get twenty feet.” Stratton shrugged and looked at the man. “That’s a compliment by the way,” the blond guy said. “What,” Stratton asked. “That I’d only get twenty feet?” “That you’d make it twenty feet is the compliment,” the blond guy said smiling. Stratton just looked at him. This man was hard to figure out. He was obviously a professional, but didn’t seem straight military. Spook? Most likely, Stratton thought. “So Richard, here’s the deal,” the blond man started. “Richard?,” Stratton asked. “Yeah, Richard Cecil,” the blond man replied pointing at Stratton. “That’s you. Born in Richmond Virginia. Same day and year. We’ve found it’s easier for the folks if we keep the majority of the relevant facts the same.” “Richard Cecil,” Stratton said. “What kind of name is that?” “What kind of name is Felix Stratton,” the blond man replied. “So here’s the deal Richard. We’re not sold on you, not completely. But we’re going to find out just how far we can trust you. You’re lucky you surrendered to us.” “Why’s that,” Stratton, now Cecil asked. “Cause Richard,” the blond man said making some notes in the file. “We’re the ones best equipped to deal with your old friends when they come to kill you.” *********** That caught Stratton’s attention. “What?,” Stratton exclaimed. "They don’t know where I am." “No, they don’t,” the blond man looking at Stratton. “Not yet, but they will. We’ll see to that.” “What,” Stratton said standing up so fast the chair flew into the wall behind him. He expected guards to pour into the room, but they didn’t. The man didn’t even move. “What the hell…” “Sit. Down.” The blond man ordered. Stratton didn’t move. He knew better then to make a move towards the man. Did he make a mistake surrendering? “Listen to me very carefully Richard,” the man said. “You’re a dead man. One way or another. You know the Cobra organization better than we do, and we know enough to know that they don’t let anyone go. Did you know that your uniform contained a GPS and life monitor?” “W..wwhat,” Stratton stuttered. Was this true or a lie. Did it matter? “We’re already on the move. We’re positive they have our location and that could have compromised another of our operations,” the blond man said, as calm as always. “We’re not holding that against you by the way. We figured you didn’t know about the suits additions. So they know you weren’t killed at the warehouse and that you were brought back with us.” “But what…” Stratton was at a lose. “You have to die,” the blond man started. “But this is the part where you lucked out by finding us. My unit, we were created to deal specifically with organizations like Cobra. That’s what we’re trained to do. We’re going to help you to die. And in so doing, you’ll prove to us that we can trust you.” The blond man slid some papers across the table to Stratton, who remained standing. The man just looked up at him and Stratton got the impression that no matter what he did he was going to die, it’s just how he went out that would matter. He gathered up the chair and sat back down. “So let tell you what you’re going to do,” the blond man said and he proceeded to tell Stratton how he was to die. END

The end of The Viper episode.
But not the end of Mercer. I'm not done with his tale yet.
