who out there knows how to avoid discoloration in the white plastic of certain joe toys. i have no or never had any problem with my stuff, but i am curious as to why? was it because my collection has mostly been in low light situations for most of its history or was i just lucky and got a good batch? i know nothing will last forever, but i would like to take necessary precautions to keep it white in my lifetime.
the reason i ask this is because my collection is now out and thus, exposed to more sunlight, though not direct. i appreciate some enlightenment on this issue and if this has a thread already please direct me. |

Well, definitely keep them out of the sun. Your best bet is in a dry, cool, dark place in an airtight container.
I've read/heard that oxyclean and a soft brush work wonders, but I've honestly never tried it myself, so I can't honestly say that I recommend that method. |

sorry ciad it does not work. spent hours a few years back with a bucket of oxyclean and a toothbrush working over a terrordrome. In the end i still had a yellow terrordrome.

that doesn't seem much fun playing in the dark. unless i had a cool pair of night viper head gear. i don't actually have any yellowing probs so i don't need to wax on wax off yet.
i have taken to putting small dark clothes over the white vechs, for dust and sun. gotta add the plastic cover for the room redo. i have seen some really yellow vehicles, where did these people keep these things, on the driveway in august, in calcutta. |

let me tell you a secret i kept my entire collection displayed in zero sunlight with the special ge true white bulbs that were supposed to prevent yellowing, guess what some of my old figs yellowed and there was nothing more i could do. I had a 84 storm shadow and a 82 cobra battle commander both with like half a leg or half a torso turn yellow on me so i don't think there is any perfect prevention. I guess as the plastic hits 25 years old something in it breaks down.

keeping your valued 80's collection out from any light is essential. The change of temperatures in your area also has it's affects on the plastic over time, so go on and get paranoid...

Yeah, there really isn't anything that you can do to prevent the yellowing. You can slow it down, but that's about it.
I have been about as careful with my figures as you can and I still have a yellowed Snow Job, Airborne and even have yellowing on my '87 Payload. I've got a Storm Shadow that I've managed to keep white by storing it in a 3X5 zip bag, inside a plastic case and out of any light but then what fun is that figure to me? Yellowing is one of the reasons that I use the plastic that I do for casting customs. The urethane I use is highly resistant to damage from UV rays. |

I was never careful about keeping my figures out of the sunlight and none of them are yellow. Come to think of it, it's kind of weird that they aren't...
