I mostly played inside with my joes as stated in the "Joes in the wilderness" thread.
I never had any of the bases when I was a kid, so I used to improvise. I used Jenga blocks and cardboard to make bunkers, sleeping bags to make mountains, books and other things to make bases.
It worked out pretty well. I also had a playset called crossbows and catapaults which actually had working catapaults. My friends and I would launch the little disks at each other's bases. Tons of fun....
What did you use?

I used dirt hills in my yard, or the concrete parking lot accross the street.
I even used to put my joes in a glass of water and freeze it in the fridge, but the glass would always crack when it froze and my mom would yell at me.
I even once dropped a V2 Snake Eyes down a metal fence post that didn't have the endcap on it, a good 5 foot drop inside the post.......that was in 86 or 87.......the house has since been tore down, but I often wander if SE is still down that post stuck in the cement base............or if it got crushed or ripped out by a bull dozer........

When i played outside, the dirt pile or a grassy area by a tree was the scenes for my battles. When i was lucky enough to play in the snow i could usually make a fort anywhere. Inside a pile of clothes would make a great mountain or getting all of my vehicles lined up on the floor would make a great motor pool for my figures to hang out. I used to love to play with them in the bathtub too. When i was going to bed i would take a few figures with me and have some epic battles on the blankets...
