Just curious to see who used to play with their Gi Joe's outside?
Gi joe was mostly an inside toy for me. I was pretty meticulous with them. I didn't want to get them dirty or lose their weapons. The few times I did play outside with them I lost Fire Fly's gun or got sand in their joints. I discontinued bringing them outside after that. Discuss! |

For the most part I always played with my Joes outside. I would build forts and dig tunnels. I made huge pits filled with water and rivers connecting them for the aquatic missions. Most of my Joes ended up filthy and missing weapons, but I would not trade the experience for anything. When I was done playing I would put everything in a big rubber bin with some dish soap and wash it out with a hose, then leave them on the porch to dry. Man, I can't wait to have some kids so I can teach them how to build a good battlefield.

Outside for me. My neighbor had a big rock wall that ran around the front yard. Making it a perfect road. I would set up Joes at one end, and Cobra on the other.
I put out the Checkpoint blocking the road. Also had a vacant lot next to me as well making for a HUGE playfield. Snow was a good time, sometimes. I would set up trenches and bases and the set up. But by the time I was all set up, I was too cold and wet to play. Of course, one of my last times playing out side was when my dick of a stepfather came home one day and drove into the lot as I playing and purposely ran over a bunch of my stuff. Lost many good Joes that day :( |

I used to play both indoors and outside. By the time I had Joes, I was old enough not to lose much. Outside offered a lot more space to set up battles. Downside was carting everything in and out - a bunch of figures and a few vehicles. Big items (such as the HQ) were indoor only. Yes, some stuff did disappear between transit and actual play but that's what accessory packs were for!

I think i played with mine at first outside. Eventually, i got tired of losing figures and weapons so i kept the adventures inside. My bedroom was the main battlefield but sometimes the battle would stretch as far as the living room. When that happened my joe and cobra forces not only had to deal with eachother, but my mom as well. I can still remember the time she stepped on W.O.R.M.S. and sent him to his doom...

I loved outdoor play, and it probably cost me a majority of my figures. I know a thrown trowel cut off torch's foot, but I didn't really mind. He kind of looked like he should have a pegleg anyway. I remember my Tomahawk was pretty destroyed by the elements (I think I left it outside a lot) and anytime the impending cold weather came, I left some joes climbing out of flowerpots filled with water so that blowtorch and barbeque could have some sort of battlefield use once they froze over.
I always had a dirtpile as a kid. It was probably my favorite toy until the trampoline came alone, and then, with the addition, the gigantic dirtpile in conjunction with the trampoline and the new roof to jump off made me the happiest kid in the world. Dirtpiles and joes are forever linked in my mind. Oh, and inside, I loved putting the joes in my sneakers and throwing them around the room. Once I broke a vase or something and when my mother yelled at me, I blamed it entirely on the sneakership. I don't know how I thought that the shoe should take the blame, but I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time. The rubber did make them bounce in some interesting directions. |

It was a combination of both indoor and outdoor play for me. But in my neighborhood we had some kids with Sticky fingers and that's when the out door missions stopped.
But my best friend and I would play outdoors by his house sometimes but he had so much Joe Stuff, we stuck to indoor playing alot more.... ahh good times. |

My Joes were always outside. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in sunny California so I was always outside playing. Before my Mom & Dad built our pool in the backyard we had a huge lawn in the backyard with little dips and hills which made it perfect for my Joe vehicles to roll on. I have a pic somewhere of me setting them up when I got my first set of Joes (need to go through my Mom's old pics to post it on here). Anyways, we got our pool in the summer of '84 and it was perfect timing! I got the swamp skier and the W.H.A.L.E. that year and had so much fun with those in the swimming pool! I got the Cobra Hydrofoil the next year so I had even more fun with that! I remember doing cannonballs and using my boogie board to make huge waves! My Joes were always facing the elements outside.
Not Joe related, but I remember taking my SW figs to Paradise Cove (in Malibu) as a kid and making a Sarlacc pit in the sand. It was fun to throw figures into a sandy grave!

always, always inside, that the main reason i still have everything. we played joe outside as ourselves. they had cool toy guns back then. i had the gijoe field radio and walkie talkies to enhance the experience. we would just reanact the comics or cartoons, or come up with our own adventures as joe or cobra.

You sound like my older brother, A.V.A.C. When we were kids he always had his toys in perfect condition and rarely let them go outside or allowed others to handle them. I, on the other hand threw all caution out with the wind!
