CC stated on his return (after his 'death') that he re-built his empire through illegitimate cash schemes. It could fully be a Madoff scenario (perhaps the face under the mask is a well traveled financier...), all multi-billion dollar ponzi schemes.

About how he recruits, wasn't it said in an interview with one of the writters of the cartoon that before Hasblow forced Serpentor on them, at that time called 'Cobra Emperor', there was a plot about a marxist like guy that Cobra was founded on, then Commander corrupted it?

Why it's obvious that old CC joined in the highly lucrative and illegal world of illicit rubber chicken smuggling....or maybe not.
In my Joeverse CC started out small, like many a despotical SOB's do. He found a small town that was going under, with his charming lisp and penchant for blue he wooed over the people of Springfield; many gave up their life savings and donated to the cause. From there he began to move his organization slowly and silently underground. He somehow met up with Zartan and the Dreadnoks and used them to protect shipments of small arms, to distribute drugs/illicit goods, as well as to strong arm businesses he planned to take over. Soon a young radical came to his attention, the Baroness. With her influence and help he scammed/coerced millions out of the rich and powerful; using her family name as a front to hid is operations. He met Xamot and Tomax whose ruthless greed and blind ambition and their ability to make a buck he persauded them to his side. Soon they began to recruit young executives, disontented YUPPIES to work for them. Through the Twins Cobra Commander watched his originally small operations fund grow exponentially and this is how he came to the attention of Destro who was only too willing to deal. He offered arms, tech support, even the use of his Iron Grenaiders as advisors. By the time CC started operations his slipshod organization went from pennies on the dollar to becoming a billion plus dollar conglomerate in the short perioud of four years. That's how I explain his vast funds and ability to field such an army. |

Duh R&D? They were always kidnapping scientists to build things, free R&D at gun point.

While I was kind of joking in my previous post, in all seriousness I think that speech is one of the most finely crafted bits of ideologogy in comic history. Not at all sarcastic! It's simply a brilliant deconstruction of how the flaws in certain American values can be used for something far worse, or frankly perhaps far better.
"Do not let the false rumors of our military mishaps mislead you! Cobra is winning! When the citizenry loll back on their fat haunches and hire the poor minorities to do their dirty work, we win! When the love of money eclipses moral conviction, we win! When good men see the ascension of evil and do nothing, we win!" ... So what if I memorized that for a public debate course in the 7th grade??? >___>

Thanks. It's a modded soviet commander cap, not general class, but lower. Strapped some chains, lightning bolts, and a Cobra symbol to it. An actual antique!
Picture my childhood. A strange little ragamuffin, daughter of soviet expatriates, trying to convince my classmates at the age of 13 that the bourgeois corporateocracy that they nuzzled upon was a sham. In a seventh-grade debate class. At the time, the hat was two sizes too big for me, but I wore it anyway I've since divorced myself from those purile countercultural notions, but I like to wear that hat on special occassions. I am a woman of hope, and I believe in COBRA. :P~
