anyone who is a member on this site is a true fan, we all took the time to join this wonderful online community to talk about and research joes on a daily basis...so imo that makes us all true fans

I think true fans are antonyms for band wagon jumpers. Wagon Jumpers are the people that like a given thing ONLY when liking it is IN or COOL to the masses and True Fans are the ones that stick around when that given thing's hype fades away, becomes OUT and "so 10 minutes ago."
It's not about how much you buy, or how much you know about the history of a franchise, it's about how cool you think the franchise is.

Doesn't everyone think their personal "fandom" is true... no one thinks they're lying to them self. How would anyone really know if they weren't a "true fan"? If everyone thinks they are a "true fan" and there's no recognized authority on the subject to bestow titles of "True Fan"... how is it even a meaningful title?
Why aren't there more Joes from the Deep South?
And would it kill Hasbro to give us a Marine Corps Officer?

Really, most of the time when you hear someone say "I'm a true fan" it's their way of boosting themselves up and saying they're better then someone else for whatever reason; more knowledge, disliking something etc..
I think that if you have to use the term "true fan" in reference to disliking something that someone else does, i.e. "Only someone that's not a true fan would like that crap", then you're not a true fan yourself.
(generic "you", not referencing anyone specific)
C.I.A.D. had it right way back on the first page of this thread.

"True fan" is a term to be used ironically, or not at all. If you dare call youself a "true fan" without it, then this guy should be your avatar across all the interwebz for all time.

This is one post I never thought I would see on the Tank...
I hang out at Brassgoggles for Steampunk and there is always a thread going on about what's Steampunk and what's not, then you get the comments about the Goths that use to always ask the same question. As stated above, it's a way for some people to make themselves feel better than others. I don't see how you could ever use a term like "True Fan" in regards to Joe, there are way too many different forms.
I just think there are people with more free time on their hands than others.

For me a "true fan" of G.I. Joe is someone who loved his ARAH Joes more than any other toy when he was a kid.

I'm a true fan.
Gi joe is a major part of my life. It makes me happy and I love everything about it. At least the Cobra part.
I love the show, the comics, the movie, etc. I was upset when they stopped making them in 1994.
