I played with GI Joes as a Kid...... I've "collected" GI Joes since the first TRU re-issue sets from 1997 hit. I've been through bad times and good.
I loved the 25th anniversery line I think it's one of my favorite lines of all time, I LOVE getting old school characters. But the lines running out of steam, cause while pretty much everything up to 1986 is gold. After that it starts lossing some steam. Personally I'd easily buy every figure no questions asked up to at least 88, but to the general consumers not so much. I'm feeling pretty content with the classic stuff, theres still some holes like cover girl, airtight, footloose, keelhaul, frostbite, lowlight.... I'd love to get another set of 7 packs to finsish the classic stuff. But there is no way that they could try to go all out with classic based stuff right after the movie. It's lost allot of it's steam since all the main iconic characters have been made. I am loving this new modern like it's like almost expanded resolute to a degree in the designs. It's so well done, and these are going to do great at getting all the new fans from the movie plus collectors dig them as well. I'm going to have my classic section and my modern section now. |

Whining or not, everyone has a right to discuss what they want here, correct? This persons thread, whether previously visited or not, has a right to be stated and we can all choose whether we want to or what we want to respond. That's the glory of this site....
Regarding the "true fan" or whether we're "being slapped in the face" and all that...I don't agree with this persons feelings on the matter. At first I wasn't excited at all about the new ROC figures/vehicles. There were a couple I wanted to see up close and when I did I bought more than expected. I also have 3 vehicles and am planning on purchasing a Dragon Hawk at some point. That said, Hasbro cares very little about the "true fan" at certain points in production. With the 25th line I think they were pretty concerned about what they put out for "us" and again, that was to make money. They may have HOPED kids would have bought it but I don't think the majority of us would contest that most of the people that bought those toys were more "adults" (haha) like us. However, we were really the only marketable consumers for those toys at the time. I NEVER saw a child buy one and the only kid I EVER knew that was in to them was my buddy's son. Guess what? His dad is a Joe collector like me. So there's your answer as to why this kid had awesome taste. A major motion picture coming out and the success of Transformers before it changed all that. Why did we buy Joes back in the day? Several reasons but there were a LOT of us that bought it because of the cartoons &/or comics. Throw the new movie in and Jr. all of a sudden wants toys that only adults wanted before. They changed their direction but still considered the "true fan" in many regards. The ROC figures we have are the same scale, they come with the same kick @$$ weapons/accessories (minus the launchers) and the quality has actually gone up a little IMO. Pick and choose but I think there is probably something in the ROC line for every "true fan". We just need to let go of the past, which Joe or otherwise, can be a big problem for some....sometimes. I was VERY interested to see what they were going to show at JoeCon and I have to say as happy as I am with the ROC stuff I've picked up so far....I'm ECSTATIC for the stuff that's coming. I don't care if they change a name here or there and if I don't like it I won't buy it. HD is a perfect example. Won't budge on that, thought the guy from LOST was great in the movie so some credit there, but overall I don't like the figure or the character that much. Pass. Plain and simple. That goes for several other Joes in the line that I still enjoy the old figures/characters better and won't pick up the bland toys they made. Hopefully the kids will.....and I think they have responded by doing so. Hasbro, IMO, is hitting it out of the park with the coming waves in late '09 and '10. Some of that stuff I can't wait to get my hands on and I don't feel betrayed or spit on by them in the least. I think they actually took it up a notch with what they've shown us at JoeCon and maybe that's just the planets aligning or maybe some of those people that make those toys decided to make sure whatever it was they were putting out was just going to kick @$$ overall and both kids and "true fans" would flock to it. I know I will be hunting this stuff down looooong into the next year. Can't freakin' wait for my Snow Cat...or Battle Cat, or Demon Cat or wtf ever they want to call it. It's a Snow Cat to me and I'll be there on day one grabbing one! |

I'm so happy Joe Con is this weekend and am drooling over a lot of what I've seen. My son's 5 and there's a Joe movie out. I haven't played this much since I was a kid! |

Totally see the rise, but I must have been absent for the fall. Of course this is circumstantial evidence, and as such not good to predict current trends, but Pittsburgh seems to be in love with Joe. And the new figures from the fair seem to be some kind of benevolent marriage between a movie aesthetic and a more militaristic design. Breathtaking.
Heck, curious as to how many people (myself included) joined the boards when the new movie came out. There's life in this ancient toyline yet And it will ebb and flow, as all things do. Not to pontificate, but are you aware of how often religions undergo changes of faith and story? That's the whole thing with the storytelling art, of which GI Joe is certainly part: it's always changing.

I have to agree with your take on Hasbro. I don't want to get in to what defines a true fan but I think the numbers will show that the top sales years for the original 80s lines were 82-88 and then a rapid decline because the vehicles and figures didn't resemble anything real. I think that is what is going to happen with the majority of the ROC line when you compare it to the 25th line. I live next to Fort Hood and the are tons of collectors. When the 25th figures and vehicles were out you couldn't find any on the shelves. The ROC stuff is just sitting there and the GIs around here haven't ran out of money to spend I promise you. I think Hasbro can still reissue vehicles like the Mauler, Tomohawk, and Maggot along with some of the other popular 80s figures and still make the ROC line however they want and keep everyone happy. Why they won't I don't know because I bet they would make a lot more money. I hope the ROC line does alright but hopefully someone at Hasbro will see the demand for the 25th stuff and fire up the reissues again.

Ok, so I guess I started a flame war with the "true fan" comment. It was not my intention to claim that I'm a true fan. If certain members would read what is typed before they get all of their personal attacks in, they'd see that I STOPPED collecting midway through 88, and started back up again with the 25th line. I'm not on a soap box, so get off yours. I guess an open forum isn't open unless you kiss ass and like everything that gets put on the shelf. I don't know what the problem is on this site about speaking your mind, while not personally attacking anyone elses views or opinions? To get a personal attack by an Administrator of this site is complete immature BULLSHIT!!! That's all have to say on this matter. You collect what you like, and I'll do the same.

Telling you to get off of the "True Fan" soapbox is truth. Fans in General, including me, are tired of the labels being placed to suit ones own personal beliefs. *EDIT* What the fark does "liking everything" have to do with my response to you? Seems like you should take your own advice and read a post before going off on a tirade. |

C.I.A.D, calm down! I made no personal attacks on you! You seems to have your ass hairs in a twist today. This is the second thread where you have chimed in with your personal opinion on the "TRUE FAN" meaning, or whatever you want to label it. I know that we're all "TRUE FANS" of the line that's why we defend what we like, or dislike about it. Also the last time I checked I had no gold belt around my waist, so don't refer to me as "CHAMP".

Pardon, but who isn't calm? You apparently have mistaken a response to your comments as some sort of an attack two different times now. If you don't want a response, don't comment. That's how conversations typically work. You commented, I responded, rinse, repeat. You're now stating that we're all true fans, but that's not what your original post insinuated. Would claiming that you're back peddling be considered an attack too? As for the "second thread", again, you should read posts as you suggested I should do earlier. The other thread you're referring to is entitled "What is a true fan"....so kind of hard not to respond with something related to the title, no? |
