The "True fan" expression, and many of the people who use it as some kind of badge of superiority, makes me boggle.
Is a 'true fan' someone who dismisses (usually with a bizarre sense of pride) anything that came after 1987? Is a 'true fan' someone who embraces the spirit of GI JOE and appreciates it in different forms? Is someone who gets into Joe as a result of the film not a 'true fan'? Or maybe there's no such thing. You're either either a Joe fan or not - You accept which aspects of Joe you like and which you don't, and that choice will be different for everybody. A person creating some ludicrous, nebulous title to make them feel 'more' of a fan than someone else (ergo making their opinion more 'valid', of course!) is destined to create division and argument. ...just in my opinion of course. ^ noun, plural truths /truðz, truθs/ [troothz, trooths] 1. the true or actual state of a matter: He tried to find out the truth. 2. conformity with fact or reality; verity: the truth of a statement. 3. a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like: mathematical truths. 4. the state or character of being true. 5. actuality or actual existence. 6. an obvious or accepted fact; truism; platitude. 7. honesty; integrity; truthfulness. 8. I don't think there is anything wrong with calling yourself a "True Fan". But I do agree with you Crimson Rage that alot of people do use it as some kind of badge of superiority . I consider myself a true fan because I love the line and have followed it for more than 25 years now. Not to say that I am lemming and I buy everything GI Joe, but what I am is a person that everything that is GI Joe will interest me and/or arouse my curiosity.

Let me first start out by saying that I've been a fan of GI Joe forever. I like the vintage figs more than the modern era. I got all wrapped up in buying the 25th figs, I bought all the stuff that came out up through wave 9. I lost interest after that, much like I did midway through 1988, but none the less it's Hasbro that changes my mind on what I want to buy. In the 80's it was getting too Sc-Fi, now twenty some years later I see the same thing happening. Now I know these are made for kids in mind, but isn't it really us collectors that have kept this line going all these years? You'd think as a smart business move Hasbro would listen more to the "TRUE" fans of GI Joe, and give us what we want. I have yet to see a kid in the aisles at a store looking at them. I'm not saying they don't, but more big kids (adults) buy them. I could only imagine how much more money I would've spent if they produced more of what the fans want. Am I the only one who feels this way about the ME, or ROC figs?
Hasbro was brilliant in striking the iron while it was hot in re-releasing the 25th Anniversary stuff. So many adults and collectors scarfed it all up and the numbers justified making a movie that luckily did well. Its a double-edge sword. They are trying to please those who like the vintage stuff. But they have to move on. So its a personal choice. I haven't bought any ROC stuff. I may buy the diorama/vintage products and try to apply old stickers to it. I hope they do separate the lines to a ROC, ME, and Resolute. I don't feel betrayed by Hasbro, it is what it is. They offer products for profit, I'm free to buy or not buy them. |

I agree to an extent, but why can't we have both? I've seen alot of kids while Joe hunting, and it's amazing to see a kid get excited about Destro and Storm Shadow like I used to. That has to continue. I do wish they'd throw us a bone or two (USS Flagg... HELLO HASBRO!!!) but the kids have to come first. As far as the sci-fi element, that's been around since '82 (unless the army really had a Laser Rifle Trooper). Sci-Fi is, and always has been, a part of GI Joe. They do go overboard sometimes (Serpentor, Cobra-La), but it's still fun.

I quit buying, playing with, and collecting Joes back when I was around 11-12 years old. I did not pick it back up until the awesome 25th line steamed onto the scene! So I did not help to keep anything going for 20+ years! If you had continued to collect (and play with Joes) that entire time...well then more power to ya man! With that said, I am selective in what I pick up for myself or for our 5 year old son. I do not "like" everything released, but Joe is going strong so it's good for all fans. Right? If you want only what you "like", and "want" then maybe the customizing game is where you need to turn. ? On another small note...if you find fault with the images that have been shared of the new Recondo, Snow Job, and especially that sweet Beachhead...we need to send you something to clean that screen off with man!

I've seen a few people posting that RoC figs are just sitting on the shelves and kids aren't looking at them. I don't know where you're from, or what water the kids are drinking, but where I am I have 4 walmarts in close range and a TRU. All had big floor displays of tons of RoC stuff and all are pretty much sold out of figs. The vehicles, not so much, being in Canada, they can get pricey (the night raven is well over $50 with tax, the pit is $112+).
All I'm saying is that just because they may not be selling in your area, don't think they aren't selling well somewhere else. |

A fan is someone who enjoys and probably possess a passion for a particular subject/hobby. Short for 'fanatic.' They come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. Some are just more vocal and glib about what they want. I have to problem with people like that because I want certain things myself. True Hasblo is going to do whatever they want but everyone has the right to say what they want.

I am a true fan, that is I am a fan who likes GI Joe in any incarnation it may show up in. All fans are true fans, that is what makes this toy line so much fun. Any one from the early 60's to today who have a love for these plastic toys are all fans. Never forget that GI Joe started as a 12 inch doll line and what we have today is nothing close to that. My ARAH 3 and 3/4th toys are not as true fan as vintage 12 inch GI Joe dolls are but my stuff means a heck of a lot more to me than any 12 inch doll could ever do.
