here we go again.......
what was intended as a father son moment which Xsoldier shared with us is now going to escalate into another flame war.

i hope my son takes the same approach with an open mind and shows an interest in various versions of joes, comic characters, etc... The last thing i want is for him to further re-enforce the stereotype of the narrow-minded fan-boy. I've talked to several people that played with joe's a bit as kids but had not followed the line for years. They seemed to really enjoy the movie for what it was - a fun action flick and didn't look too hard for flaws and character deviations.

no, it was another ROC bashing disguised as a father/son moment. unfortunately, the reality of the situation is evident in his own words, so I am only commenting on what he has said himself. that is quite on topic.

It seems kind of silly to me for anyone to compare Superman to GI Joe. I mean, at least with Superman, the character origin/backstory and costume don't change every few years. The same can't be said for GI Joe which changes character backgrounds and costumes all the friggen time.
But the character and costumes have changed. Modern supes doesn't wear the same costume as the original. There are kingdom come supes, JLU supes, Justice Lords supes, Red Son, Supes, those goofy red and blue supes (the ones with the lighting type white patterns on them). Supes also was a bad ass brawler originally, and he couldn't fly among other powers he didn't originally have.

are we to believe the child came to this conclusion on his own and isn't simply repeating what he has heard his father say to make him happy, which is something very common with children? the fact that old papa is proud of his son reveals his own position on the matter and it is more likely than not he is just repeating proud ol' dad's own position. essentially, daddy is proud that his son can repeat his own feelings and seeks his dady's approval.
that's very sad. nothing makes me happier than seeing my daughter think and act on her own. the last thing I want her to be is me. |

My 6 year old loves the ROC line. To him it's the movie version of GI JOE, not the cartoon or comics. He understands the difference & owns toys from both versions. To each there own I supposeā¦

I don't agree. The way I see it is Xsoldier (who is obviously an old school fan) has taken the liberty of sharing his passion for GI Joe with his young son. These liberties included classic comics, cartoons, vintage and 25th era figures. His son (we'll assume over the past few years) has taken a liking to these characters and in some way made them his own. I don't see anything wrong with looking at ROC figures and not liking them. If he picks up a ROC Breaker and says that's not the Breaker from the cartoon what is the harm in that? Big deal, he doesn't like it. I really don't think it's cool assuming his father brainwashed him.

it is more likely than not what the child said is what the child heard. these aren't thoughts he came up on his own. the fact that his dad is proud of it reveals his dad feels the same way. what is the likelihood that the dad feels exactly like the son, but never said it, his son never heard it, but came to the exact same conclusion? highly unlikely. the origination of this kids opinion is evident that it came from his father, so what the dad is proud of is that his son feels the same way that he does, which is very common in children who seek their parents approval to repeat their parents interests back to them. that is what happened here, yet the dad wants us to believe the kid came to the conclusion on his own -- the very same opinion he himself holds. riiiiiigghhht. |
