Based on what her filecard says, and what's explained in the precursory comic that came with the video game, what do you think of her backstory?
Master practicioner of Capoeira, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Shuai Jiao, Kendo and Fencing. Rumored to be able to master a fighting style after encountering it only once. Fought in underground fights, battling to the death and walking away without a scratch. Traits of savantism, but not autistic. Can identify and solve complex physical calculations quickly. “Everything she sees has a Data Set. Miles left before a car will run out of gas, Ammo counts in the bad guys guns…” It's even been stated that she's a world class video game player. Thoughts? |

I like the figure. I picked her up last weekend.
But, I am curious as to the expansion of her personal story. By the way they are making her out thus far, it's like she could kick the ass of both Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow with attributes like that. |

It's her personality that's going to make or break it for me. If she's just some near-automaton combat machine, then I've no real interest. As it stands right now she looks like a cross between Marvel's Taskmaster and DC's Batgirl III (Cassandra Cain). I suspect they're going to make "complete lack of social skills" or whatever her "weakness" which has been done before, as well. Basically they need to show me something original about her before I buy in.
And yeah, I suspect she's going to suffer from "later appearance degradation" where in her introductory story she's the deadliest thing walking but later on she's no better than Snake-Eyes or Storm Shadow or whoever. |

I'm afraid they're setting her up to be too powerful.
Yeah, she does sound like a cross between Taskmaster and Cassandra Cain. The thing with the guns in the preview, knowing how full the ammo clip is and what kind of ammo, without holding the guns herself, I don't know how she can figure out the amount and type of ammo. If she was holding the guns, she'd have a point of reference for the weight of the gun with a full clip and could then go from there. But there's too many variables with someone else holding it: the person's relative strength (if you knew the gun weight and the strength of the person, could figure out how "heavy" the gun is by how the person is holding it), how long the person's been holding it (would dip more the longer the person stands there so would look heavier then possible could be), how relaxed the person is (the dip thing again) and I'm sure there are others as well. I'll be intersted in seeing how she's used. The photographic reflexes thing, learning the moves by watching them, is possible but it's not an instant thing. She couldn't walk into an arena against someone with a new fighting style and walk out without a scratch because at the start of the fight she would have no idea how to counter the moves or how the person would react. She'd get her ass handed to her, but at the end she'd have a better understanding but she wouldn't be a master. Marvel handled it well with the Taskmaster, the guy studied film before he would try to fight Captain America, Daredevil, Hawkeye, etc.. There's also the part where your body has to be able to handle the forms, motions, stress, etc.. Now if she spent months watching tape of a martial arts style, watching different masters, etc.. then she would be better off when entering the ring. But the thing is, if they go the photographic reflexes angle (which it looks like they are), then she wouldn't be a master of that style, she'd just be copying it and anyone that could change styles mid-fight would overwhelm her. She wouldn't know the style, she'd just be copying it. So if it's a move she hadn't seen before, she wouldn't know what to do. If she only watched an hour of tape, for example, she'd only know the moves shown in that one hour.

a little too 'superhero-y' for my tastes. plus, i have no interest in martial arts of any sort, so i don't find the character appealing from that respect either.
i wouldn't be surprised if she ends up being a popular character, though. seems like a sort of fanboy's dream - female, martial arts, kicks ass, etc. which is sort of why i don't like what i've read/seen thusfar. seems to be trying too hard to fit every niche. |

Personally? I'm already tired of this Boba Fett-ette. Her file name might as well be "Mary Sue". She sounds too good, too perfect, and way too superhuman for my own Joe tastes. I like the figure, like the concept of a solo action-oriented covert op character. She can play the role of Sam(antha) Fisher within my collection, but I'm ignoring most of this superpowered stuff.
The whole 'mastering a martial art from just watching it' thing has been taken too far in media recently, be it that one girl in Heroes Season Two, or the autistic main character in the Thai movie Chocolate, etc, etc, etc... Sure, it's a real ability (one every one of us has naturally to some degree) and there are people who can pick up and mimic really complex motions fairly quickly, but the whole 'mastering a martial art' just by watching the style for a few minutes is laughable. Even if you could learn every move of a style in a few minutes (even something relatively simple and limited like Kendo would probably take longer), you'd still be merely imitating, not fully grasping the style or having the understanding to improvise on it. So while she could surprise Snake-eyes or Stormshadow by pulling out a move similar to what they may have used, their experience and proper training would have them still beating her fairly quickly. Heck, she might even injure herself by trying a combination of things she saw without fully knowing how one pulls them off. Heh. And now that I've scrolled down a bit before previewing this, I've noticed Troynos pretty much beat me to the punch on most of my points. :-) |
