Just think about the cash you would be spending if you had a different hobby. Say, fixing up cars or motorcycles for example. Or boating/waterskiing. As far as hobbies go, action figure collecting is pretty cheap.
Also, it seems like these figures hold their value fairly decently. So if you get in over your head, you can always head to ebay and recover much of what you've spent.
Have to trade:
-MIB Twin Cannon
-MIB Desert Ram
-POC Low Light
-POC Destro (v27)
-POC Shadow Tracker
-POC Snake Eyes (v54)
-25th Red Ninjas
-25th Ninja Vipers
I don't care if the figures are loose or even incomplete :-)

My wife and I make enough to pay are bills ok, and still able to spend a little extra on fun stuff for are selfs. I did return about 350 dollars of stuff in feburary this year because we were a little tight on funds. Dog's vet bill. It was stuff I mainly bought at Xmas time. My wife was upset that I had to do it. She is perrty great in that way the only thing she doesen't understand is army building. I just try to wait for the sales and try to stay 50 dollar a month.

Sell your children on the black market, that out to get you a PITT at least.
That and rob a bank.
Rob one of the guys on this board. A good B&E will net you quite the collection.

Lots of GREAT info in this post! Some of it I didn't even think about OR realize that I was doing. Here's my take:
1). DEFINITELY budget. Joes are my biggest hobby, but I also enjoy playing videogames. I don't smoke and rarely drink but my wife smokes. I figure we spend $40 on her habit every 2 weeks so I keep mine around there too. So I guess $80 a month. Some months I won't spend NEAR that much. Other months I might spend $100, but it all works out. Like everyone else has said, if you have to balance feeding yourself/ wife/ children and buying some toys, then it's obvious that there's a problem. That leads me to number 2...
2). DON'T GET ADDICTED! Sometimes easier said than done - I should know. When I first got BACk into Joes (then Transformers, etc), I was spending so much that I almost lost my car (this was back in 1997 when I still lived at home with my parents). That helped me put the whole collecting thing into perspective. When the 25th line came out, it got a little out of control again... BUT I learned my lesson the first time and took back alot of what I had bought or sold it here on the tank.
3). Talk about your purchases or wants with your wife FIRST! Don't buy something and then try to hide it from her. I love my wife and she always comes first. If we had a fight about Joes, then she's going to win... not the Joes. As long as your wife or significant other knows that THEY come first (you might need to show them, not just tell them) then that makes things easier. Try to include them in your Joe hunts as well, if they seem interested in doing that. It will make her feel like it's something that the two of you are doing TOGETHER. If she finds something that you've been looking for, make sure you thank her and love on her.
4). I try my HARDEST not to impulse buy. If there are a few things that I have my eye on, I'll pick them up and go about my shopping for what I DO need. By the time I'm ready to check out, I've usually talked myself out of an impulse buy and I actually DO feel better that I don't have "buyers remorse". I might be a little ticked that I came home empty handed, but those are the dry spells that every collector goes through. When in doubt, ALWAYS keep the receipt!
5). Sometimes you'll come across a figure that YOU don't want but you know is popular. If you have the funds to do so, PICK IT UP! Trade fodder is always handy to keep around. Like with myself - I picked up a Build N Brawl Sgt Slaughter back in April. Never really wanted him BUT I knew that someone would. Last week I was at a Target and they had 5 of the Scarlett/ Hawk comicpacks for $1.64 a piece. You better BELIEVE that I grabbed those up! Scarlett heads and bodies are ALWAYS up there on most customizers' needs lists (DOC, I'm looking at you) and they come in handy for trades.
6). Don't buy a whole set if all you want is a figure or two. This holds especially true for the Cobra Island 7-packs. Yes, I was guilty of paying about $15 (with shipping) for each of the 3 Alley Vipers I have BUT I was going to pay around that much even to get them loose (if I could) from people here on the tank after they got their 7-packs. Now, if you want MOST of the figures, then go ahead and get the sets and then trade off the figures you don't want to try to recoup the costs. Or, trade them off if you're an army builder.
7). Keep a list, or decide what you REALLY want. When my wife and I moved from our apartment and bought our first home, space wasn't really a concern anymore. I have my own office/ playroom now. When we lived in the apartment though, she gave me one simple rule: if I buy it and it sits there, unopened, for more than a week, take it back. I didn't like the rule at first but it's taught me to appriciate WHAT I have as opposed to HOW MUCH I have. I used to army build like CRAZY but I cut it down from 20 of each to 3; 5 if I REALLY like the character. Such as with the 30 Crimson Guards I had. I had 2 of the Fred comicpacks and 3 singles opened. the other 25 were just sitting there MOC. When I found the TRU 5-packs at Ross for $12.99, I bought 5 packs. I then took back the 25 single carded Crimson Guards to a Walmart and got my money back. Considering that each single carded Crimson Guard cost $6, I saved around $85. I haven't gone crazy over the vehicles either. I have the Tiger Rat, VAMP and a few others. I used to have an INSANE amount of ARAH vehicles between 1999 and 2003. When I became unemployed in 2003, it caused me to sell all of my vintage vehicles (including a MISB Tomahawk). I never really regained the passion for vehicle collecting again, which is ok. My collecting (up to that point) was focused mainly on getting the stuff that I had always WANTED as a kid but could never have. My parents didn't make alot of money so it was usually figures for me and my brother, with a few vehicles scattered in here and there.
