I know there are if not a majority than alot of people that really dig the Original characters. But It would be interesting and ever-evolving if the Characters got Promotions and retired or settled for desk jobs at the Pentagon while younger characters are created or "recruited" to Keep the Joe force strong. Like Hawk.. should be a 4 star by now.. maybe even retired or reassigned. Duke should definately be retired now he must be in his 50's in Joe-verse. Of course you would have to replace his Position with a Young Dynamic character that could be developed. It would have to be done Smartly to not create the same Roddimus Prime debackle that happened in Transformers. What are your thoughts on this..?

I think that was the original plan.
Rock 'n Roll - Roadblock - Repeater And so on.. There was even a part of the comic when Hawk went from Col. to Gen. and most of the original 13 except Stalker and Snake-Eyes got promoted and were supposed to be on non-active duty.

I agree with you, however in order for that to happen, there would have to be an ongoing continuity, like star wars or robotech. Only with the ongoing saga approach could you acheive this. G.I. Joe in contrast, has been undergoing a constant rebirth or reimagining, and with each new incarnation, the Joeverse begins anew with no acknowledgement of previous story arcs or continuity. Only Sigma six tried to do this by showing an aged Hawk and stating that Duke was given his codename in honor of the previous Duke before him. I think our best shot of this would be in comic book form.

Which the Marvel comic tried to do (with the promotion of the original 13) but for whatever reason (fan popularity, Hasbro wanting to make new figures of those characters) it didn't stick.

They actually did in the early 2000s.
Double Blast, Wetdown, Whiteout and couple others. New characters, same molds. Prior to that was new characters and new molds, but for some reason they kept bringing the old names/characters back. Short Fuze was replaced by Downtown but then Short Fuze came back, and here's the funny thing, when he came back he used the Downtown mold. VvV and Spytroops introduced alot of new characters: Dart (new ranger to replace the others), Depthcharge, Barrell Roll, Crosshair (to replace Low-Light) and couple others.

As for actual evolution of a character, I don't think any Joe showed it better than Grunt. From the literal embodiment of his code name to leaving the military to further his education, finding love, beginning a family, and a return to duty, Grunt was a fantastic character both with and away from the Joes that is all too often overlooked simply for doing what he was supposed to all too well. |
